There are a number of safe plants for growing on the pen fencing.
Double-check, but I believe that nasturtiums are good - and pretty - I have grown cucumber on the duck pen fence. If you want something more permanent, consider hardy kiwi - it will need a very sturdy fence - it can get thick...
Neat. I would look into how to make sure the previously used areas don't harbor any pathogens.
I am thinking vinegar or barn lime or something like that.
I did not mean to sound short. The air flow is an important part of proper duck housing. You don't have to go huge, but from my New England with Runners point of view, what I want for housing is something that stays above freezing in winter, is pretty easy to get to even when there are 3 feet...
There may be ducks that can, but based on what I have read about Idaho winters, and what I know from the forum and my own flock, that carrier is not going to be sufficient for ducks in the winter.
Larger breeds of ducks are at risk of spraining their legs if they have to jump. My Runners and Buffs seem to do fine getting in and out of the kiddie pool.
Some ducks are not as keen on getting into water. Try tossing some treats into the water. I would not put the duck in if the duck does not want to go in.
I enjoyed a nice afternoon with the ducks yesterday - so sunny, even though it was near freezing. Spent some time with them today, too, but I was shoveling the 6 inches of snow while they ate all the snow they could, because they are so helpful!
For what it's worth, I designed a simple plywood box - double walled as we are in the northeast, based on a nice doghouse video I found on Youtube.
Most ducks don't perch, so it's just a rectangular box with a few niceties, like a drop ceiling made with polycarbonate panels to let light in but...
If the garden keeps out all predators, and there is food and water available, shade for hot days and a relatively warm place on cold days, that may work out.
I would want 6 sq. ft. - about a half a square meter - for each of them minimum for a night shelter/house. I would build it so I could...
A dog house with a sturdy door and good ventilation works well at night when it is not brutally cold. Half inch metal hardware cloth is a great invention. When mine were in a house outside I used that, and two strands of equine electric fence, at 6 inches and 15 inches above the ground. It...
Let's see. 140 / 4 is 35. That's 35 sf per duck, and Storey's Guide recommends 25 if they don't have access to pasture (if I recall correctly). So you otta be good, there. 140 / 25 is 5+, so another couple of ducks may work out pretty well. Is there an area you can also walk them? Our 13...
Nice design (c:
I would get the best most secure hardware I could manage (afford and what's available) for shutters and doors. I use heavy hasps and keyed locks. These serve a few purposes. Those should hold until raccoons start using bolt cutters. Oh, my, what a nightmare that would be.
