Quote: I agree about the cyst but the yellowish stuff was chicken fat. Inside was clear, soft but not liquid. j. Ah...looked just like the cyst I had removed once...the yellow stuff anyway. Davian, you better go back to the Doc and quick! Your chickens transmitted chicken fat to ya...

To everyone: Thank you for helping me feel I made the right decision. I really appreciate it! To Amy: Would have loved to sit down with a chicken friend and enjoyed that glass of wine! Thank you everyone, you've been a huge help through this chicken drama. julie

Ok, it's done with. Feel bad because it did not come from inside her body, it was in the skin only. Her pecking at it made it shrink so keep in mind this originally was at least 2" long, sticking out of her body. I have to apologize as we did this outside and I had to use the tiny viewfinder...

Quote: Thank you. There are pics at the beginning of the thread and I really should tweak to make the color right. The end that I was able to remove the outer hard scab, it was very pink and pointed. Even tho close up, the photos do not show it in much detail. I try to fix and repost when...

OMGosh - WHAT is this growth?! Warning gross graphic

Quote: Thank you. I've decided to give her lots of yummy goodies and have my husband "help her cross" tonight. She is dripping blood now a little and has runny poo. Even sick chickens or housed chickens fm an injury have never had it as bad as hers so I don't think it's stress. Has to be...

Quote: Dang. Her "thing" had a hard crust (likely scabbinb but totally looked like dried poo, hence trying to wash it off). Did they crust over on dogs? Don't know if you saw my post this am but she is pecking at it, I can tell cause she has blood on one side of her face. If you could...

This morning she has a bright red spot (probably 3" circle) on the outside of her feathers. Not sure if she pecked at her or what. I have her in a dog kennel in the kitchen. She ate good yesterday and started making the "I laid an egg" announcement, but there was no egg. I'm guessing the...

Quote: Sorry, one last question? Would you eat her eggs? I usually have extras that I sell so I need them to be safe. That's great info on the cornstarch, thank you! In all my years with animals (I rescue horses and sometimes dogs) I've not come across this tip. Yeah!

Quote: That could possibly be it - thank you! I did just now go check on her. The pink protruding part appeared swollen and I gently pinched it. It did not bother the hen so at least that part is not painful, but it did shoot out blood. She does react if I move the entire piece, which...

I also found this link that is helpful for anyone trying to determine cyst vs tumor: http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-diet-and-health/bird-diseases/bird-diseases-tumor.aspx It also doesn't mean good news for my little hen. Edited to add this great link...

Quote: That is great to know. I had an awesome house silkie that had an eye infection that would not go away. Her eye duct would get filled with just what you described. I assumed it was a type of infection. One day when I was trying to gently clean it (for the millionth time and yes she'd...

Well I've read just about as much as my stomach can handle... sooo many nasty looking photos & trying to figure this out! I did find this on one forum: "...unfortunately, as my vet informed me last year when I took in a hen with a lump at the base of her tail, chickens can suffer from upwards...

OMGosh - WHAT is this growth?! Warning gross graphic

Quote: No, it's on her side. I had a hen that had prolapsed - even still had the egg in the "bag" (don't know the term) outside her body! Cleaned her up, kept her isolated and warm, antibotics and then eventually after a couple weeks of being healed and no antibotics she went back in the...

OMGosh - WHAT is this growth?! Warning gross graphic

Quote: This is what I'm starting to think too. I don't know if it's growing but overall length is almost 2" and certainly wasn't there as a young chicken. I got her from the hatchery and played with them a lot so I'm certain it's a new growth (new as in since probably May). And you're...

Quote: Thanks, I'll start researching that. It is not intestinal feeling at all. It's rather firm. I suppose I could go back to soaking and try to remove the rest and see how big a thing I'm dealing with....but not sure it's worth putting her through the trauma if the end result is the...

Quote: This is my first thought also. If it is not an oil gland tumor/abcess, I am one who would probably remove the thing by cutting/pulling it off even if it does bleed and then letting the hole heal. Tumor sounds like a possibility (TY!), but not anywhere near the oil gland..,unless...

This hen (White Leghorn) is this year's chick and laying well. I was petting her the other day and felt underneath her feathers a big glob. It looked like a hen had pooped on her but it was hidden well in the feathers and rock hard. I tried to scrape it off and realized it was stuck extremely...
