Hooray for the good news!
Nice to have what looked like a dismal hatch make you smile!
(and I mean that in the sense of it looked so hopeless at one point and now it's not!)

re: feather sexing
The short answer is "No." It is a gene that is bred into them....kind of hatchery bio-engineering, if you will. If the gene is not there, you could be making a horrid mistake relying on this!

I'm loving Pic 1. The chick in the lower right-hand corner has such a "Come hither" pose!
Pic 2...the chick passed out in the margarita glass! OMG!

IMHO, you should've bartered! Roo operations v. dental work. Believe me, professional people love that sort of stuff because it can be done on the cheap and avoids some taxes because you're swapping services.
All done hatchin' with 32 set, 20 to lockdown and 18 hatched. All shipped eggs, so a 56% overall hatch rate....although 90% of lockdown eggs! Not as good as some years; Not as bad as others. Chicks = 7 Wheaten Marans, 10 Salmon Faverolles, 1 TJ's. Will post a group photo once the last...

Depends on the size of the box, which can depend on the number of eggs. All shippers I've bought from sent them in the Flat Rate USPS boxes (I'd quote a price, but I think rates are changing this week sometime). Eggs are usually individually wrapped (bubble wrap, newspaper) and then...

Well I still have a bunch of pages to catch up but looks like Peep_Show is the winner of my First Chick After Midnight comp. Congratulations!
Wow! Thanks! Perhaps my luck has changed with the new year...this is a nice start. Let me know if/when it's official. I'd...
I'm still in hatch mode....Two of the lazy egg Marans have pipped. The ones NOT showing any activity are the ginormous Marans egg and 1 Faverolles. Token the TJ's egg and the last Faverolle to hatch are still hanging out in the bator fluffing up and getting their bearings.
In the meantime...

DH and I are rolling on the floor. This is wrong on SO many levels..... In a good way.
And now you've just convinced my DH that chicken folk are crazy...
At 1:48 today Token the TJ's egg hatched!
All that's left are 3 Marans and 1 SF that seem to be doing nothing, so I will ninja-stealth empty the bator and leave them lazy eggs to their devices.
Meanwhile, back in the brooder... Everyone is getting drinking lessons. Happy New Year!

Ok, so we opened it up and it's out and seemingly fine, except that it hasn't opened it's eyes. I think I can even see the eyes moving behind the membrane there. It's chirping, and moving around a bit. I put it back in the bator to dry and rest up. I don't think I've ever seen one not...
Mahroni
What a good dentist you are! I hope your client treasures you as those that go above and beyond to be of service. Kinda reminds me of an ill-fated at-home hair coloring incident gone awry many years ago that left my head a shade -- I kid you not -- of California poppy. It was...
Good morning all Peoples, Peeps and Pips!
Like a scene of a kid at Christmas, the first thing upon waking was rushing to the bator to see what new surprise was there!
Got a few more Marans out (although, frankly, unless I up-end the chicks I cannot tell... Next time won't hatch all yellow...
There was much coaching (via people peeps and tapping the bator plastic with a fingernail to mimic pecking) and cheering! "Go! Go! Don't stop now! Go!" He kicked free and then 30 seconds later he launched into the crowd (who wondered what all the noise was about). Happy 2012...
Las Vegas puts on a super display every year from the Strip....which we watch from the quiet and comfort of our back porch up valley. Don't want to be out tonight as it's Amateur Night for boozers that have been working on it all weekend.
We are half-way zipped now!
C'mon Chickee! Make...
Darn! A Faverolles chick that zipped decided not to rest and just shoved out. I have one other NYD Hatch Contest prospect SF that has a large hunk o' shell it has chipped off, but no real zippage yet and one that just pipped (I saw it!!!). The Marans, alas, pipped ages ago and are just...

LOVE it!
I kinda like to think that actually carrying a little extra weight is good for the brain... Keeps it nice and plump and snug in the ol' noggin.
