We had a power outage today for 2 and a half hours. The brooder was off that long in the unheated barn. The incubators with my 112 cotunix eggs and my 7 barnevelder eggs were cold too. The quail eggs are 5 days in; I set the chicken eggs yesterday.
The good news is that my chicks from the...

First, I'm not a vegetarian. I hunt. And yes, I've raised animals to slaughter.
The difference is that the ones I butchered weren't pets. I didn't raise them from birth "like a child." They hatched and while I enjoyed their interaction, I don't confuse my meals with my companion...
Four out of the seven hatched, as I expected. Got some bulbs for the brooder today and moved the four to the barn--just in time! I got 120 quail eggs waiting to go into the incubator I was using as a makeshift brooder.
Okay, I was wrong. The 4th egg zipped and out came another Barnevelder!
I candled my last 3 eggs. The two Barnevelder eggs are a no-go, but the EE egg is a maybe. It looks like something is in there. I'm going to just let it sit and see what comes up, if anything.

Yes, I vaguely remember it....LOL Cool pic. Do the chickens go for a free ride often?
Just Java the EE. I'd catch...
For my colorful rooster entry:
This is Pistol. He's hanging with his flock and not really into getting his picture taken.
He's an EE and the most colorful bird I have, if you don't count the blue and lavender birds.
I missed the flapper contest, but I thought you'd enjoy these picts anyway:
Yes, my EE, Java, is riding Sid the llama. She likes to do that. He doesn't seem to mind.

On the positive side.... you won't spend the day with your nose pressed to the side of the incubator. And ducklings are slow hatchers.
That is good to know. This is ky first time duck hatching. I was joking that they.were going to imprint on my cats since I won't be home...
