I built my coop to be open on three sides with a fan for our very hot humid summers. I built panels to fit the three sides to close it in for the winter. My photo shows it open but with one panel up for demonstration. If it gets colder than usual I hang plastic shower curtains on hooks around...
I did a poop sling for the coop. I used plastic tablecloth fabric and added super snaps on the sides. I use hay in it and add hay to cover the poop. Once it's full I dump it and can unsnap and spray and reinstall.
Same problem here, so I built a shelter, too. Then I built a new coop inside the shelter. Then I built removable wooden panels for all open sides of the coop for winter. Easy to put on when it turns cool and take off when it turns warm. So far it has done very well through a couple of winters...
I am in Louisiana and have to have super ventilation and be in the shade. So I built panels that can be added in the winter. I just put the panels up yesterday.
Be sure you give the chicken poop enough "cooling" time before you want to have living plants where the poop is. It really should be composted. Chicken poop is "hot" fertilizer and will kill plants straight from the chicken. On the other hand, I can put fresh rabbit poop directly into my beds...
Here are a few pictures of the coop I built this summer. So far our girls are very happy except they seem to be rebelling from the new wood shutters I just installed getting ready for winter, but I think they will like them when it turns cold.
Gosh, that is so beautiful!!
I posted this a long time ago. I constructed a shelter, mostly from roadside trash to cover my Ware chicken coops, but when I found the coops didn't fit under the shelter I decided to build a coop under the shelter for a custom fit.
First I built the shelter.
Then I built the coop in place...
Here in LA, the summers are long, HOT, and HUMID. Coops here have to be very open and I even use a fan as well.
Just put panels on in the winter.
I could not use the coops with solid wood walls, even with windows here, I would lose chickens from heat stroke. My chicken yard is shaded by a...
I used OSB only on the roof. Painted both sides. Covered with felt and shingles. It's been a year and holding up in hot, humid Louisiana. I used very high quality plywood everywhere else but someone gave me some OSB for free do I used it on the roof.
I used a silicon caulk gun to fill in all gaps and edges on the floor of my coop which is linoleum tiles. I can hose it out and it dried quickly. My poop sling removes the need to hose it out often.
I love your build. Makes me want to start something new. I had lots of materials from the side of the road, free too, so proud. But, you are right about the trips to Lowe's to buy stuff. I didn't keep tabs. Didn't want to know how much I spent.
It'll be great. I'm jealous you have water and electricity. I have outdoor extension cords and a water hose. Lol. I bought extension cord protectors that are attached to where the cords are plugged together. It keeps out water and dirt. Got them from My Pet Chicken.
Mine
Mine, too. I've done my builds in the chicken yard and the worse problem is them under foot and on my ladder. And we all know what a problem it is when you get out the shovel. Lol
