I loved this thread for years but once a coop/run setup is mostly done, many don't return here again. Glad you found it again. Some really helpful info on here especially for newbies!

Organizing such a multitude of topics must be a phenomenal undertaking so doing Searches for a topic works best for me -- although that's quite a daunting way to search for a BYC subject also. Every time I want to bring up the Dominique Thread! I have to search through several pages with the...

There are so-o-o many threads on BYC -- after all these years I still get surprised at a thread I missed over the years that I could've benefited from! I have a few threads that are my favourites and get alerts whenever there's activity on them -- it's a nice BYC feature to get those alerts!

Beautiful coop! How did you solve the issue of rain leaking into the nestbox from the top hinges? We don't get much rain here but eventually all coops develop fissures, gaps, warps, etc, that eventually allow rain to enter the nestbox/coop. I built a patio roof over our external nestbox...

@Mad Catter -- absolutely love the shed conversion! Wish I were handy like you to do those wonderful modifications! Two things I'd need to modify if it were mine -- a wider ramp leading up to the perches and platforms and add perches in front of the nestboxes. I have Silkies that are...

I think you'll find the Brite Tap assembly is easy compared to using water bowls. The wild birds can't access the nipples and the cleanliness of the drinking water is so worth it. I've gone three weeks in winter without having to clean out the jug and then it was minimal cleaning. No algae...

$20 isn't bad for shipping from CA to IL. It's a large 2-gallon jug kit. However, you can just purchase the Brite Tap nipple valve attachment separately (which is much smaller to ship) and buy the Rubbermaid 2-gal jug within your own home state. The assembly is easy. Brite Tap has some...

Brite Tap nipple valve waterer jugs are 50% off for 4th of July. I like ours for a small flock. I have 3 of these and can put vitamins or electrolytes into the water jug. 2-gal handle jug is easy to carry, hang up in the coop, or set up free-standing. No algae buildup and water stays fresh...

Chickies grow fast! Hurry, hurry! Haha! Having a good roof over a coop is EVERYTHING! For 5 years we had to keep tarping our first little coop so with the new coop we put a patio roof over it.

Hurray! My new Blue Breda juveniles arrived this afternoon -- they are such a docile breed. They'll be spending a couple weeks quarantine inside and getting a vet health check tomorrow.

I found these in black on ebay for $18.12 each - free shipping on orders over $50. Perfect for Silkie size chickens and the bigger Homz totes are better for large fowl...

I call all pressed wood "particle board' -- even the OSB -- but thanks for the correction. OSB hasn't done well for me and I didn't bother with it in the next coop we got either, and my coops have also been super over-ventilated because of our area climate which is almost desert-like since the...

As soon as Walmart gets a good product we like for the chickens they never re-stock the item again neither in-store or on-line! We got our Homz totes from Walmart and got the last ones on the shelf. They never restocked the item again.

It makes sense in your situation to re-home the timid birds. We have a limit of 5 hens only so we chose to keep the gentle/docile breeds so we could enjoy watching "chicken TV". A small flock like ours doesn't need dual purpose drama queens. Docile lightweight Breda are still relatively rare...

Because of Calif drought I have to provide greens for our chickens -- sprouted seeds, chopped Spinach, Chard, or Rocket Lettuce. I don't give Cabbage or Kale from the cruciferous group because of some poultry health issues: http://www.poultryhelp.com/toxicplants.html Brassica spp. (CABBAGE...

Sure! If it's on grass or dirt, anchor the kennel panels to the ground and line paver stones all around the base to keep out digging critters. Some dog kennels come with a chainlink topper too. Not cheap but certainly want to keep chickens secure from predators. Paver stone squares around...

Love the awning over the egg collection door. During rain it will keep the leaks out of the nestboxes.
