I recommend not mixing bantams and large fowl in your small coop. The bantams will almost always be at a disadvantage. I've got 3 bantams with 6 LF birds in a 4x7ish coop and 7ishx12 run. If not for some creative accomodations that make their small size an asset, the bantams would have a bad...

Gpeters3, I think what junebug is saying is that while you have more than the generally recommended amount of space for the number of birds you have, the *type* of space may not be adequate. Without access to space that allows for one's birds to engage in natural behaviors, one is likely to see...

Deleon98, you may want to start a new thread about your coop plans and ask questions that are specific to your plans there. That way people don't have to scroll back through all the other posts in this thread to find the ones about your coop. Plus, your probably going to get more responses if...

You'll still want to cover any opening with 1/2" hardware cloth. Snakes can push themselves vertically up a surface almost as high as they are long, so depending on how tall your coop is, yes, even holes at the top can be accessed by snakes. You can opt for a peaked roof, but a single slope...

Wondering why you think you need a ladder. Your roosts are, what, maybe 24" off the floor at most? Your breeds can jump up that distance just fine. In a small coop I'd be looking to maximize space as much as I can. If the roosts are low enough the birds will more than likely just hop up rather...

My feed store only sells a large flake and a small flake. I always buy the large flake and I'm pleased with how it works.

I'd throw down some shavings. Sometimes the poop can be really mushy and you'll just end up smearing it all over if you try to sweep it on the bare floor. Shavings should last a long time over a wooden floor. They will coat and dry out the poop. I've had the same shavings in my coop for months...

That's why I suggested you raise it up on legs and give it a proper floor. You'll get added predator protection as well as other bonuses. Firstly, it gets it high enough so you don't have to stoop to clean it. Secondly, no predators can get in from below. A third consideration is that if the...

I'd use the well house. It looks great! It's hard to tell the dimensions, but I assume it's not tall enough to stand in. If not then I'd put it up on legs and give it a proper floor. My coop started life as a little kids play structure. Bending down and getting in there to retrieve a bird was a...

What are the dimensions of the plywood? What would the interior dimensions be? There is nothing in the picture to give any idea of the size.

Social reform started as early as the 1880's and 90's in this country. Individual states adopted programs to aid the poor and disabled in the 1900's. Teddy Roosevelt ran on a platform of "New Nationalism" that called for social insurance for the poor and unemployed. By the mid-twenties most...

You mean the post-WW1 recession? Or maybe the Depression of 1920? The government was scrambling for solutions to the problems created by the rising unemployment rate post-war and hoping to minimize the strain placed on already strained social programs. Encouraging self-sufficiency and...

I'm in Massachusetts too. Unless you live on Nantucket, you can have fishers, mink, and both long and short tailed weasels. All species are found state-wide. I believe the short tailed are the most abundant.

I love the look of your coop. I do agree with others though that some predator proofing is in order. With regards to nest box privacy, my girls would probably find your setup too open. I have large birds yet they've picked the smallest, darkest nest box as their favorite to lay in. If I used...

Great use of salvaged materials. In my area open eaves, no pop door and chicken wire would be inviting every fox, coon, skunk, and any other predator that happened to walk by to a nice chicken dinner though.

I used a cinder block with a 100 watt light bulb in each side covered with a tile as a heater in my coop last year. It was my first year with chickens and I felt like they needed something. I honestly don't know if it did anything to mitigate the cold. It was nice to have because i could sit a...

Frank, that's a cute little coop but it seems to be lacking substantial ventilation. Those little vents will not create the air flow needed to provide a healthy environment for your birds. Additionally, summer temperatures will be uncomfortable inside. Given your average temps I'd put in vents...
