send some of your rain to western NC. PLEASE!!! We are in a drought situation here. I have been on byc for a long time. Right now I have 4 orps, 4comets two wyn, and some roosters. They are young and not laying yet. I had to give up a flock last yr. because of my health. I missed them so...
Crows will fly around and attack a hawk. You may never see or hear the hawk. They are incredibly quiet and stealty. But crows will make all kinds of noise if they are near. You may have had a hawk around and the crows were after it and it got your hen.
I too love the idea of functional shutters. I may steal from you. We bought a premade storage building and have been working eversince to get it like we want it for the chickens. I want to cut more window for ventilation and the shutter idea would be great. Thanks for the idea.
No such thing as too many coops or too big to build. Now, you know you need a coop for each broody to hatch and partially raise her chicks. And yes you will eventually have a broody and want to add hens to lay while the others molt at least every other yr. and more likely every year. Then...
You would grow to hate the tree. The twigs and leaves will drive you batty. Getting them off the top of a covered run is not easy. I have had to have a couple cut that shaded the run too much. Better to use a cover on part of it for shade.
Suggestions on coop. Make the nest big enough to hold lots of eggs for hatching and deep enough for a large long hen plus her chicks. That was a mistake I made on one of my builds too small. If possible make the coop longer to give a longer area to roost. If you want 6 chicks now they will...
fduncan,
That is really pretty. We just bought a large building and devided it into three parts inside. If i ever do it again I will buy a really long one and put in at least 4 sections. It is surprising how many coop areas you end up needing to house baby chicks, a breeding group and old...
Hi there,
For one thing after having chickens for many yrs. I'd say put a hardware cloth on the floor and elevate the coop off the ground at least 12 inches. Reason poop can fall through and less snake and animal predation. Two better air circulation. Put wheels on the post to move it...
I have an idea for you that I used on my coop interior walls. I found the SOLID plastic type stuff they use around bathtubs . It is rough on one side but smooth on the back. I turned the backside to the inside of the coop. It is easy to wash and keep clean . It also would be a good barrier...
There are two reasons for no food or water in coops. One, food tolls rats and mice in. Two ,water in the coop can cause frost damage on the combs. I keep both in a covered run with wire all around and under. The chickens sleep inside away from either.
Its a wonder the whole place did not go up in flames. Be careful outhere. The chicken dust can ignite very quickly to cause a fire. Keep your lights and stuff clean near the lights.
Try Black walnuts falling from a big tree on a metal roof. It would almost wake the dead. The first time I heard it I thought it was a shot gun.. I jumped for sure. I think chickens get use to about anything. The motorcycles next door etc.
I wish I could.
