Will your chickens be confined to the coop and run, or allowed to free range full or part time?
If the former, then a coop with about 4 sq foot per bird is OK, IF they also have a very large run. Make this at least 10 sq foot per bird, but go larger if you can- you won't regret it.
If the...
OK, on a serious note , I don't notice a lot of dust a few feet away from the coop, but it looks like you live in a warmer climate, so it might be more of an issue?
What about planting a couple of vines on the side of the coop run facing the pool. They'd provide shade in the summer, and help...
What she said!!!
And if your chickens can't free range, then I'd go even larger with the run- you won't regret it. If you can't go larger, then consider getting fewer chickens.
And if there is nothing on Craigslist, then I'd google Chicken Coops and the name of your town. We must have at...
I found my coop builder on Craigslist.
That can be risky, of course, but he has a web site and Facebook site for his business, with lots of pics and reviews, so it worked out.
That might be one option in your area.
That looks great! If your chickens get some free range time, then the coop is mainly for egg laying and to keep them safe at night. Even your dog looks proud, is he OK around the chickens?
This looks quite secure!
You could consider putting wood chips down in the run (I got mine from a local tree trimming company). Keeps things a bit less muddy in the winter and they scratch for bugs underneath.
Sounds like a great set up. Never thought of Llamas as guardian 'dogs', lol
I can't think of what else you could do to make your coop more attractive. I bet it is nice and cool when the grape vines leaf out.
Nice! Looks like you have good ventilation covered.
*you could put small lip around that floor opening if you don't want bedding to fall through, if that's even a concern.
*I have a small raised coop and with a vinyl floor. I use Stall Dry (from a feed store) on the floor. It really desiccates...
I'd put vinyl down on the bottom of the nest boxes and caulk the seams. Maybe seal or paint the trim parts for easy cleaning later.
Nest box bedding can help, but if an egg breaks, it trickles down.
If you've got the extra vinyl, it seems worth the effort.
You all did a great job! Your frame/door looks nice and secure.
However, chicken wire can be destroyed by raccoons or other ground predators. You might consider adding some welded wire or hardware mesh about 2 feet up the sides (including the door) and then fanning it out about 18-24 inches at...
We don't care about pretty, just about happy chickens with room. And your's have that!
I wonder if you might need to slap some pain on the OSB so it's protected and easier to clean? (maybe you're planning that).
I like the fact that you have a tree in your run for shade.
I agree you'll probably need more ventilation along the top near the roof, not just for ventilation, but also perhaps a couple of windows backed by 1/2" hardware mesh to allow the coop to cool off during warmer months.
I think @ilikechikin mentioned that he was upgrading the run to 4x4 posts...
Incredible job! I love the idea of using Amazon Echo.
I'm not sure where on BYC's that I saw this, but you can attach (duct tape) a furnace fan to the intake side of those box fans to catch some of the dust and prolong their life. A 20 inch x 20 inch filter works for mine.
Well done!!!!
I would seriously think of setting up the chunnel at some point. Not that hard to do, and then you can use a secondary area for daytime only, so it can contain the chickens, but not necessarily be Fort Knox. That's if your daytime predators are mainly hawks, eagles, etc.
With a narrow long area...
