Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Al I'm so very sorry for your loss, and all the best to your wife. So glad that she wasn't injured by those rotten dogs, and actually got two of them. Mary

Question for normanack; do your birds free range, or are they in a fenced run? I could see more problems if they are fenced in rather than out. Maybe extra feeding stations and waterers would help. What breeds of hens? I'm with Bee on this one; never happened like that here. Mary

Back2MyRoots, every state has some kind of livestock protection laws. Much more importantly, YOU WERE BITTEN! If your skin was broken or scratched AT ALL, file a bite report with your county animal control people, or the sherrif, or whoever, and contact your doctor. That dog must hav proff...

At this point your'e going to have to tough it out; good nursing care, meds, and time. I wouldn't kill any birds that are eating; they may recover. Diagnosis will involve post-mortem exam and testing if one dies or is put down. Depending on the problem, you may have a carrier situation...

smyers32, some background info would be helpful, as in flock source, husbandry, age of birds, etc. At this point you are treating but it's too soon to evaluate the outcome. Give it a few days; you'll have more to report then. Good luck, Mary

I can't get excited one way or another about washing eggs; just don't actually immerse them in a dish of water. If someone wants to rinse and wipe, then refrigerate, that's just fine, it works for me. Mary

I looked up the ivermectin dose to be sure; it's in a formulary, but probably no actual research data to back it up.... 0.2 mg./ kgm body weight, orally or subcutaneous injection. That's about 0.1 mg. per pound body weight. of the injectable drug, NOT the pour-on product. I have 30 to 35...

I am a veterinarian, and I can't think that paste horse wormer is a good choice for chickens. Each slot on the tube is marked for 250 lbs. body weight; people have poisoned their dogs on the stuff, much less a tiny chicken. I have used liquid Ivermectin, as it's much easier to control the...

About guard dogs in general___they are meant to GUARD___ don"t expect to get a marshmallow personality. You need to be an experienced dog person who can handle such an animal and be a leader, or things won't be good. I agree about GP and the problems with the hair coat, having seen a few who...

Hello everyone, I just finished reading this entire thread. Loved it! I wanted to finish it before saying anything. My first chiockens were Belgian d'Uccles from a neighbor 20 years ago; stil have their descendents on the farm, but also Sussex, and a mixed flock of layers. The last 15 meat...
