What do OT's think about just feeling the keel bone, see if it is hard and sharp or if the area is covered with fat, blunting the feel of the bone?
A true heroin for sure. A good wife is definitely addicting.
OK, I'd fallen 40 pages behind, I just caught up.
We get lots of free or almost free veggies from our garden, (or I should say our weeds), a nearby farm, grocery store leftovers, etc... we chop them up and feed them to our chickens...
Of course you wouldn't hurt a flea. Unless the flea happened to be on the possum's back when you smacked it with a shovel. Poor innocent flea; that's what is known as "collateral damage".
Haven't started on the fermented feed yet, I want to do it shortly. One question- it's dropping below freezing at night here, and pretty soon it will get that way in the daytime. Is the FF damp? Will it freeze out in the run?
I have two Columbian Wyandottes that are also about 25 to 26 weeks old, and haven't started yet. They're bigger than our two 20 month olds, so I hope they get started soon...
love things like that. A few weeks ago a county contractor was trimming trees on the road across from us, filling a truck with the chips. I went to the supervisor, asked if he'd like to dump the truck load at my place, save him sending his truck all the way back to their facility to dump it. His...
For two dollars and change it's not stainless. I'll try to find a plastic one to replace it- I'm sure I can slip a razor blade under it to cut the glue. I'm sure I'll be ok for a month or so until I can get the replacement.
thanks,
hmm, I don't know, it just started getting cold a few days ago so I only just started using that. I figured since the metal part comes from a standard quart waterer, it's something lots of people are using, so I didn't think it would be a problem.
I mix ACV at about one tablespoon per gallon...
Some talk a few pages back about heated dog dishes. I got a cheap one from walmart. I don't want the birds to have an easy time pooping in their water, so I attached a cheap twist on quart waterer:

Thanks, I'm going to look closely at that. We have a wry tailed girl, 6 months old, hasn't started laying yet. We only eat the eggs, we don't brood them, so I'm not concerned about her genetics. However, we are concerned she'll have trouble laying or get egg bound, and if so will probably have...
If I note where mine are perched in the evening, then in the morning I know which poop pile came from which bird. Does your setup allow for that? If so, you'll see in the morning what she did all night.
I think you've hit the nail on the head. Our other layer (two pullets haven't started yet, and we have one roo) will sit in the nest until she lays, and nothing bothers her. This one, if she's on the nest and hears commotion she'll come running out to see what is going on.
I've mentioned my splay-leg hen before- we made the coop and run "handicap accessible" for her, and the past month we've wrapped her upper thigh with vet wrap for a couple days each week. That has made a big difference, she moves better, doesn't trip and fall as much, and has an easier time...
