Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I don't have any chickens right now and it's been a LOT of years since I had any. So I don't know if I qualify to participate. IMO only I would keep both birds. I think Bird 1 is your layer and bird 2 is a rooster. Ok I might chuck bird 2 in the oven if I got hungry. lol

I know exactly where you are coming from here Bee. I will get my chicks in the spring and they will be hatchery mutts but in time I am sure I can improve on them. It won't be the first time I have been down this road with animals and probably won't be the last. I have had some success in...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Some of us have just learned to keep our mouths shut and let the wisdom roll over us. I really think I absorb it much better that way.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

When you bought these did they already come with everything you needed to mount them to the bucket? I wasn't sure if you would have to buy anything additional to mount them? I have looked into these and the nipples and the one thing I worry about with the nipples is the water that would hit...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Oh Pozees I think I love you!! I have Border Collies. One because he is what I chose to have and the other was a rescue. They are brilliant dogs in my mind but they are also VERY challenging! They are in constant motion and they are always thinking. One of the biggest problems for them is that...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I absolutely agree with you Pozees! I have rehabilitated a LOT of dogs and it does take a LOT of input from you. It also requires you to have the same attributes as the dog if you are going to be successful. It also takes time and dedication to make things right for you and the dog.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Beekissed, I really don't believe it is a problem with the breed of dog but a problem of the breed of owner. Dogs are very much like children but people either treat them like a baby or adult human. You cannot as a responsible animal owner just turn your animals loose and expect them to do...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

This sounds very much like my border collies. They can REALLY focus and it is very difficult to break that focus. Training will very much help to channel that behavior. They are very brilliant dogs and it is amazing how quickly they learn things. One of mine has things down pat with just a...

WOW!!! You miss groundhogs?!! In the 5 years we have lived on our property my DH has killed at least 30 or 40 and the darn things keep coming back. We have plenty of coyotes but they sure aren't getting them either. We just can't get rid of the darn things. We don't have a lot of rabbits but...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Boy was I glad to see this post!!! I haven't raised chickens for many, many years but I was starting to think that my thinking was wrong!! I intend to order some chicks next spring and was just going to put them in the coop (with heat lamps, food, water, & bedding of course)....then I started...
