Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Yep. That mean old rooster of ours when I was a kid was a hatchery bird. That was what we had access to. I'm not going to say how MANY years ago, but suffice it to say that it was over 30. That darn ole rooster biased my opinoin toward them, and I've never wanted them since. Yours are...

Get a hen house like these guys are showing, face it south, and you don't have to worry about frost bit combs. We had temps of minus 18 with wind chills (we are on a hill) of minus 50-60. I don't heat the coop. I had no frostbit combs. Those pics of the hen houses you guys are showing are...

I couldn't agree more! I still have a scar on my knee from a RIR rooster that nailed me when I was a teen. OFF WITH HIS HEAD! This is just my own personal BIASED opinion. If you want chickens for laying eggs, get a layer. If you want to raise them for meat, get a meat chicken. The dual...

Oh, wow. Yes, I love these old buildings. We had one... until a wind storm took it down 3 years ago. It was red block on the bottom, roof design similar to Fred's, and wood on the upper half. Windows let in light and warmth in the winter, and the roof design kept it cool and ventilated in...

If your one week old chicks are flying out of their pen at this age, and you have cats around, you have two problems. One is keeping the birds in their place, and two (the bigger problem) is keeping the cats out. You need to improve you pen arrangements.

In a totally different scenario, we have 3 great pyreneees. They are not house dogs. They guard our livestock and my poultry. They do what they do naturally, but they are not at all dominant over us or in the house. They are very submissive to us. They are, however, very strong willed. If...

The one night we accidently left a light on by our goose pen was the night raccoons ripped their heds off through the wire. Coincidence? Maybe. Look at my avatar. THAT is my predator protection. We have over 50 acres of woods around us. Bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, possums, skunks, reports...

Whether they know what they are talking about or not, some folks just like to stretch the truth a bit. Full of that stuff you find on the ground in the bull pen.

............tasted really good, too! On the spur thing... I HAVE to use pliars. I'm old. I'm arthritic. Pliars work. Not much blood. Besides... ALL bleeding stops...eventually!

Wow. Over 300 pages here before I took time to check it out. I guess you could consider me an old timer. I'm 57 and have had chicken off and on all my life. My mom had chickens before I can remember. In fact when she was a little girl, the building behind their house was a hatchery. She...
