Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I'm an OT and I'm still learning. There is as much to breeding chickens as you want there to be. IMO not all people can do it well. I know that Bee could do it, but most people just don't have the eye they need to succeed. Keeping chickens is easy if you spend a little time and get reliable info...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I hatched from broodies for 4 years and then this year I had a BYC lady down the street hatch for me cuz she enjoyed doing it and seeing the strange chicks that come from my farm. My big incubator is on loan to a friend and you know how that can be....hopefully I will get it back. I have an even...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have found that the better birds seem to come from the ones incubated and brooded by the mommie, but it is not efficient if you want a lot of birds. Be careful if you use the spiral plastic bands without numbers. They can cut a leg. Use colored cable ties for quick recognition. Al will tell...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

The APA has a committee studying the feasibility of some APA judges being trained to certify flocks to be true heritage birds. The APA currently has no position on what a heritage bird is....the ALBC does and they use the APA recognition year as the date to qualify a breed. I think it is mid...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

This is the best way to keep track of your chicks. The punch itself is very small and if done at hatch, will not bleed. Legbands can fall off and have the potential of injuring a bird if they don't fit properly as the bird grows......it is just a matter of how important it is to keep track of...

I see that I left the a off Bolado. I will be showing 30-40 birds there. The big show for us in Calif is at Stockton two weeks later. It is an ABA national, so there will be about 3500 birds at that one. Hollister will be a tune up for the big show. What kind of herding dogs? We have Corgi's...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Watching the social order of chickens is one of my favorite pastimes. It helped keep me reasonably sane while working 20 years at the university. There is a nice show in Hollister Jan 12-13 (Baldo Park)...just down the road from you. It is an opportunity to see some pretty nice birds. Walt

Good job Fred! I was watching football and missed the results. All of a sudden I had over 100 posts to read. We should do one of these every so often. It was interesting to see what was important to each person who participated. It was a good way to get people to look at chickens in another...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I dunno........The heads always need work. IMO Cornish are the hardest breed to improve and the white laced red color just makes it that more difficult. This is not a breed for beginners. Walt

Cornish really show how leg spacing is important. These birds are much larger than they appear in the pics. Walt
