Jim of HallFamilyFarms uses dishwasher baskets. They hold if I remember right about.. 4 eggs? maybe 6? Those mesh ones look cheaper and hold more too though.

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I have had a computer since the old Sinclairs. But you know what? I still prefer to hand write some things. For instance my hatch dates are on calendars. And I manually carry over the ages every month LOL. So I can look up and say Oh, Sugar is 18 month old or some such. I know a computer program...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Yes. The door lets the hen in and then closes on her. You have to be around to check them and let them out. It's an old thing, there's a trap nesting thread floating around started by MANOZ last year that got me into it and I built a couple. Mine have thin plywood doors with sections cut in the...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Actually with the whole "which egg did who lay" thing, I was going to use trap nesting rather than a plethora of pens. I already have a few and have done it on my existing raggedy flock, and it has proved a great tool to know which lays what and how often. But I'm only just beginning to get into...

Crazy question. When you have three hens with one roo, you still don't know which exact hen a certain egg is from, correct?

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Around here, a mister would kill them. It's already so humid in the summer that you'll be covered in sweat just standing under a shade tree not moving. After having come out from the AC. I'm not kidding. A mister? Really? In a high humidity climate? Nope. Not going to do a thing but help grow...

This is where I'm gong to jump off the truck. I have Orpingtons in one of the hottest places on earth. Ok, not really, but last Summer was so hot and dry it was considered the Worst Drought In Texas History. Not "really bad" or Gee Horrible but the worst in History. And Orpingtons are supposedly...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

LOL! Yep, my core original group are pets. And I have culled one of them. The rest are just along for the ride. They think they are pets too, but they aren't. Getting ready to get rid of the easter eggers. I love colored eggs but they're just... I donno I don't really like them.

I didn't consciously want something "to take care of" but it turns out that's exactly what I needed. I got into it for the poop. I don't even ever eat eggs! :lau But I do use them in baking so I have a few egg customers. My gardens though no longer need store bought fertilizer. I think the feed...

I'd pay tuition too! I'm not planning on raising any of those breeds but you never know. And anyway I'd just love to learn!

I like. I like the idea too of an OT discussing his favorite breeds and WHY they are favorites. Might give some insight that the specific breed threads don't convey. Maybe.

Ok as one who loves feather smell and does at time pick up and smell her chickens (and has a poor producer and just overall bad hen that should have been culled like at least last year), one like this does indeed smell different. Bet you didnt' see that coming, did you? LOL!!
