Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I'm having a difficult time determining the feather quality, but.... #1 Legs look too close together and her tail seems pinched to me, not good for laying. Also her neck seems a bit long and her back seems flat, I'm not seeing a gradual slope there. Her comb and wattles are pale and...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

To all the OT's: I would like to sincerely thank you for the knowledge and confidence I have received since finding this thread. Before coming here I had been overwhelmed with misinformation that made me doubt I could ever raise chickens. I have completely changed the way I manage my chickens...

Just a quick note on fleas....in addition to the remedies that Bee recommended, you can also bathe the dog in baby shampoo.

NanaKat: Wow! That's a lot of pumpkins. I thought I had a lot when my daughter gave me hers after she took down her decorations. I've got 10 cut up and packaged in the freezer.

Bee: Beautiful animals. I'm envious of your property too. So many on here have beautiful wooded acres and hills. So fortunate. And Armorfirelady: Interesting how you are able to see the pecking order of your flock. I've watched mine intently, but never have been able to see who is in charge or...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

It works for identifiying which ones are pullets too. Everyone kept telling me that Rhoda was a Rodney because her wattles and comb were so big and red. But I kept telling them that I didn't think so because her feathering and body shape looked like a pullet. They insisted I was wrong, so I told...

I know. I've already heard your voice in my head. I came in the house the other day and told my DH that that pullet was going to be my first cull if she pecked me one more time. I'm fed up.

Oh, man, I didn't think of putting a quarter next to them. Too late, they made simply delicious breakfast sandwiches, bacon, egg, and cheese on fresh biscuits right out of the oven. Mmmm, so good. And I caught my RIR in the act this morning. I was a bit early and caught her in the nesting box...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Oh, and on the subject of mean roosters.....it's not only roosters. I have a mean pullet. I've talked about her before and have been told she isn't aggressive by some on this site, but I strongly disagree. This young girl will come after you and peck hard at your legs or feet and sometimes...

Well, here they are, my first eggs. The first egg had a dark spot...blood? I know that's normal. The next two were perfect. The white nearest the yolk was thick as I expected, but the outer white was runny. Is that normal? I'm not sure if the yolk would be considered large or not as I have...

Just read your last post Bobby B. I envy your childhood. No wonder it chokes you up. I enjoyed your story, could listen to those all day. (I'm a city girl, brought to the country by the DH about 6yrs. ago and just started raising chickens - with the OT's help)
