Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Fred, I hatched in a pair of GQF Sportsmen for years. I'm really liking the performance of the 1588s though. I use two. One as a hatcher with the turner out , since I hatch with my eggs in the bottoms of cartons with holes punched in them. Hatching in cartons has always given me good hatches ...

Please see my page about the monofilament line I installed due to hawks and eagles. No losses.

Wal-Mart has lingerie bags with zippers.... I love the thicker suet feeders to hatch as I hatch in egg cartons. Special eggs go in those to hatch , and the chicks are toe punched. Fat suet feeders are at TSC and Wal-Mart.

I've also found that toe punched birds teach me a lot more than banded ones. I look for similarity of type in my flock . Using bands the temptation of saying oh, "that's Dolly's chick" with a highly visable legband, was too easy. Now I play a fun game of putting all the juveniles in a group that...

I think that pellet was DES, which is a synthetic hormone known to cause cancer in women whose mothers were given it to prevent miscarriages. NOT something I'd want to eat !

Bee, I raised my 11 lb wonder son and a step son. My step son sent me a birthday card when he was 21 saying, "Thanks for never making threats, always promises." Both boys knew where they stood , and what the consequences would be for bad behaviour. They're both successful guys now.

Alpha bitches have the stare that will send husbands, children, and dogs to the ground. You're born with it, or you're not.

This OT wants to thank all the Newbies for their questions. You've probably staved off dementia. There is a wonderful quote, but I can't remember who said it (oops !) .......... To TEACH IS TO LEARN TWICE Thank you all.

If those are hatchery BOs they were probably hatched in Jan-April of last year. Have they ever been wormed? Do they have bugs? Are they in a mixed flock? What is she feeding? Are they confined to a small coop and run? Usually the hatchery BOs are pretty good layers.

Those are Northern Fowl Mites. Little red dots of pepper around the vent, and on Silkies sometimes in the crest. They are blood suckers who live in the cracks in your coop, and come out at night to feed on your birds. Lice make white egg masses at the base of the feathers around the vent, and...

You ain't lived Al until you have bail bond calls for 3 years, at all hours of the day and night. I finally called the jail, and demanded to know just WHERE these people had been getting my number in all that time. It was incorrectly listed on the jail wall as a bonding service. The hoot is that...

Fred, I just finished my early hatches for the fall. 40- 100%, and 50% English Buff Orp babies out of the SOP girls . They are looking fantastic ! This should give me some nice pullets to show in the spring. The girls really have a work ethic too. They are still laying up a storm. Keeps the...

Fred, I spent years running 2 Sportsmen GQF Incubators. One as an incubator, and 1 as a hatcher. Now I do much smaller hatches and I love my little foam GQF incubators. Temp control, fan, and turners. What's not to like for not much $ ?? I have 2. One is an incubator, and one is a hatcher...

Sarah, I've never had a problem with permethrin killing my worms, though I use it very rarely in my garden. When I bought this old carriage house 23 years ago, the property consisted of sand to 30 feet deep, with scrub trees, wisteria...as in a Tarzan movie...and smilax vines as the understory...

To me the main thing is that you CARE ! You can emphathize with that poor little Silkie hen bravely undergoing that torture, but still sitting on her eggs. Thanks for treating her, and keep at it!
