Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Great post! And I am soooo in agreement. We've had chickens for such a short time, I don't even feel qualified to answer Beekissed's question. However, I/we have implemented LOTS of Old Timer Wisdom in our preparation for chickens, and I must say it's been soooo smooth and easy. I don't...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Our chicks FINALLY got here. Poor things have been in that box and bouncing around in the postal arena for four days! They were all alive, but expect two or three to be dead by morning. They weren't very lively. I took each individual chick out of the box and helped it to drink. Boy were...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Having grown up in foster care for the biggest part of my life and being "rescued" myself, I'd like to put my .02 worth in here. My mother-in-law, Therapydoglady, did rescue work all the time. She rescued and rehabilitated all kinds of animals (and LOTS of people, too) and gave them a purpose...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I looked up canker in chickens, and that is EXACTLY what it is. I looked up Dr. Peter Brown as well, and read about canker in chickens, usually spread from contaminated water (eeeeewwwww!) Poor chickens!. Can't imagine letting our chickens' water go for even a whole day! Anyway, the article...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Not now...I buried them after I killed them. It was kinda like decomposing foam rubber, or a sponge that is falling apart in texture, except it was wet. The little hen that was the worst even had it coming out her nostrils, so I'm sure the entire sinus cavities were full. Definitely a fungus...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Kids off to school and three silkies are headless...The worst one wasn't very perky this morning. The "stuff" I cleared from her mouth and throat yesterday was already back this morning, and she was having difficulty breathing, even with her mouth open. I decided to go ahead and do away with...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thank you so much for this information. I looked it up and it sounds awful. I did order vaccine, tho I'm not sure it'll help the one little hen. We'll see. Had girded myself up to dispose of them in the morning when the kids went to school, but may wait for the vaccine and see what happens...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

OK - Old Timers! Bryan brought home some almost grown silkie chicks because I wanted some to set eggs next spring (in case I bomb out with the incubator). I have put them in cages in the back yard because something just didn't look right about them, and I didn't want them around the others...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Therapydoglady used hatchery chickens for her egg production, too, so that's what we are doing as well. She replaced her flock every 2 years whether they were spent or not. She said they weren't ever worth their feed past 2 years. She always got her new stock in October or November, so they...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

WE FINALLY ORDERED OUR LAYING HENS! We've got the nest boxes all re-done so they will be easy to clean, and ordered our laying hen chicks. The brooder is set up and ready, we have a hundred pounds of chick starter (non medicated), feeders, waterers, ACV, heat lamps in place...we're ready...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Went out after lunch to work on the new cattle panel pen for the Porcelain d'Uccles (somehow, I just ran out of time and daylight yesterday!), and the other ones had pecked the poor thing's toe till it was a bloody mess again. I should have known that they would, but just didn't think of it...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Have had chickens less than a week, and we've already had a mishap...one of the porcelain d'Uccles had a toenail and part of a toe ripped off this morning. I washed it with hot soapy water (thank goodness for the water heater in the milk house!) and packed it with styptic powder. Will go back...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I was very impressed with the man. I have decided that chicken people are just very nice people. It's like a prerequisite! Ha! He is excited to see young people getting into his passion. He went from large fowl to bantams and fancy pigeons about 10 years ago, because of his rapidly advancing...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Whew! I made a flying trip to (almost) San Angelo to meet a Mr.Welling. He is the one that Bryan got the chickens from. He is a very nice man with a wonderfully wry sense of humor, and a body that is turning against him faster than he can grasp the concept. Anyway, he is getting out of the...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thanks. The ramp was on the ground when I went to feed this evening, so I just took it out of the pen. They jump in and out of their coop with no problem at all. I used a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe for their roost. I can just reach in and clean it off if it gets nasty which is why I did it. I...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Thanks, HallFamilyFarm for your input, as usual. This evening, being on clean bedding and the sand, they look great! Don't know if they used the "foot bath" or not. It's empty. The Barrel coops look interesting, but think we'll just go with what we've got. They've got to be allowed to...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

After 12 hours of having feather-footed chickens, I see now, HillfamilyFarm, why you prefer the clean legged varieties! After their trip home in a cardboard box, the d-Uccle's feet are terribly stained, and bedraggled looking. The run portion of their home is just blow sand - very fine...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Bryan arrived home tonight with 3 d'Uccles and 3 Golden Seabrites for Samantha. She is ecstatic! They came from over San Angelo way from an older man who is no longer able to show :(. But he assures us that they are definitely show quality, and he said he has done well with them. We will...
