Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in this update, but I thought I'd post it. Since my post on 2/9/12, for a while all went well with the four hens. Every now and then one of the 'healthy' ones was limping for a few days, but then would get up and be fine for a week or so. My original...

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

Another update from me, the thread starter. A couple of weeks ago, a second hen in my flock became ill quite suddenly. Her abdomen became swollen like a basketball and within 24 hours she was dead. The vet said this was the same infection that my first hen had but that it had settled in another...

Interestingly mine is accepted at night but not during the day...... I wish I could figure this out. My whole flock is being so wacky these days. Her illness is gone but she's still not completely acting normal which is contributing I think.

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

Cross posted on the other behavior thread: So last weekend I tried what some have recommended. I waited til the flock was sleepy and placed her in with them. There was a little bit of scuffling but they settled back down. Things went great (I presume) until morning. When they came running out...

I am continuing the behavior discussion here as I imagine some of this is normal with a reintroduction, but feel free to post on either thread. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=615036

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

Update: I just picked her up from the vet last night where she boarded for 3 days while I did some holiday travel. She is much stronger and healthier, but still not her total self. She's eating well and putting on a little weight. She's starting to talk. I tried to bring her back to the coop...

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

I just did some more research on this site and realized you do need to use the organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar. I'm going to have to hunt around a bit for that, but it sounds well worth it. Recall my whole flock (5) is not laying well since July and I think this could help all of them...

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

The vet is checking another sample straight from this hen. It will be ready tomorrow. What do you suggest I worm them with (anyway) if that sample comes up negative again? I don't have many people to ask in real life here. I guess this would be a good time to treat them since none of them are...

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

Just got back from the vet. My chicken has a fever and an upper respiratory infection. He says it was caused by stress, though I don't know what stress she may have had. He gave her shots of enrofloxacin (antibiotic) and meloxicam (antiinflammatory). I have to force feed her protein powder...

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

Sorry for the delay. I didn't get a notification that there were more replies. We don't have a rooster at all. She doesn't have any crippling to her feet. The main 'body effect' is that she has been hunched over, tail down, and can't seem to roost. UPDATE: She has been in an indoor crate for...

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

Oh Beth I did switch up the food for a while when the laying first dropped off. Tried a very different brand that a fellow chicken lover recommended because it boosted her flock's production. No response.

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

Thanks for the responses! CMV no lice or mites on any of them. No moldy food or dirty puddles. I've never seen a meaty type object anywhere in their pen. They eat a standard layer pellet with oyster shell. Daily they also get some greens and/or some black oil sunflower seeds. These things...

Updated 1-15-11 Very sick hen; not egg bound; diarrhea, droopy, standing upright

I've poked around quite a bit on this site. I've looked up chicken diseases. She is droopy, tail down, wings extended for balance. One foot seems less adept than the other. No problems on her feet or her comb. Her color is good. I've soaked her in warm water a couple of times. I've donned a...
