I took 4 of my calmest chicks from the easter hatch to my daughters preschool today. The kids loooooved them! They each got to feed 1 mealworm to the chicks. They were all very well behaved except one boy who wanted to squeeze the chicks and had to be restrained. LOL but my babies did so...
In case anyone ever decides to try this...don't. DON'T put your incubators outside in the sun to dry...IF you have free ranging chickens. That is...if you have styrofoam incubators. I now have an LG incubator top with 1/3 of the bottom. And fist sized chunk of the hovabator bottom missing...
i'm like 20 something pages behind. anyone want to give me the rundown? sooo...my rooster that we were going to eat but I couldn't because he is the sweetest thing ever, died. I think from wounds he received from an attack over 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty upset. I'd rather us eat him then him...
I was worried because she is both small and growing slower. She's about the same size as when she hatched whereas the the LF have grown huge already! When I add food (even though they already have some) and the chicks start stampeding, the little serama runs to the corner and when everyone is...
I was sooo worried about my little serama...she is a fraction of the size of others and she does get trampled, but boy...this little thing is fast!!! It can zip around the bigger clumsier birds!
Congrats to the winners!!! I am also curious what the total hatch rates were. You know....so I can guess better next time. LOL
And thanks to Mahroni and the rest of you. This is always fun and educational. So much love and support here...not just chicken support but moral support in...
I screwed up the quote thing, so I think its Jesshan8 that served? Thank you for your service. I don't give my husband a hard time, I just give him a list of things to tell his chief. Things like, when the kids are sick tell him I'm bringing them to his house. Since we haven't been able to...
Just got news that DH might be deploying again this sunday. They have to wait til tomorrow to be sure. I'm pretty mad. Because even if he isn't he is supposed to prepare like he is, so there goes my weekend. So we're going to see a movie tonight. If the little bugger isn't progressing much I...
Ok i have a question...the inner membrane of this egg still looks pretty veiny but where it pipped is a huge gash but no blood. Does the inner membrane still look veiny even after all the blood vessels have retracted? I'm afraid to cut into to it and hurt him but he's acting like he's ready to...
I just tested the temp with my cooking probe that I used for the LG and although it says 100 at the top of the eggs like my other thermometer they both say 94 at the bottom of the egg! No wonder they are so late, wet and dying. This last chick is much more lively since I gave it sugar vitamin...
I think I definitely had it way too low. Its my first time using a hovabator. Just when I get the LG to work I decide to get a hovabator for a better hatch and the LG did way better! Well, I gave the one chick vitamin sugar water. I'm hoping it gives him enough energy to suck them vessels...
Well I opened them up. One was alive but no pip...nicked it in the process and its bleeding. Don't think it would have made it regardless. The rest were dead and fully formed, a few internal pips, all had no yoke. One drowned. One is still alive and since I opened it its chirping its head...
So the egg I opened yesterday died and is bloated. But I still have one weakly chirping. the one I opened was very very veiny still but the membrane was very dry. I'm afraid to try to open up this last weak chriper. Part of me wants to give it a chance but part of me says...its day 26! If...
So 15 of 138 hatched...hmmm. Better than none! Only 2 of my 24 or so local eggs hatched, the rest were shipped! No quail. BUT...I had chirping last night. Today nothing. I opened an egg...ALIVE! ahhh...so I have chirping right now again. I didn't count them in my total. They're so late...
Ok 2 chicks out...had to help the shrinkwrapped one some more. Its head couldn't zip more because a strip of membrane didn't get torn and dried across its head pinning it down. I removed it but the bottom was glued to the shell. Sticky Chick Syndrome is terrible. The one that is full of goo...
I have a chick that pipped and immediately tons of goo poured out around it and the beak it stopped breathing. I got it out and opened it enough and wiped all the goo from the beak and it started to breathe again. BUT I could see the top of it is FILLED with goo. The gluey sticky kind. And...
I have another chick! Its realllly wet in there. I can't get the hovabator to lower the humidity. The LG has a problem keeping the humidity up and the hovabator has a problems keeping it down. The other pip is pretty big now.
So...do we count every chick that hatches regardless if it lives...
I have pips! Don't give up hope folks. In my problem bator I have 2 pips and a bunch of rocking eggs. I've given up all hope for the quail eggs but the rest are local eggs and a couple of the shipped eggs. But the shipped eggs look like they're doing nothing. I'm soooooo excited for more...
So, the eggs in my hovabator is chirping and rocking like crazy. The 4 or 5 heatspikes to 107-110 and the dips to 91-96 didn't kill them after all! Waiting on a pip though because they were chirping and rocking like crazy last night and nothing so far. Soooo...any advice for my serama...
wow this thread has slowed down a ton.
Pulled all the rest of my eggs out of the LG. Most died fully formed with unabsorbed yolk and airsacs that took up 3/4 of the egg. And one died perfect but I don't think it could lift its head to internally pip because the air cell also took up most of...
