    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I think I figured it out. The birds don't seem to like the three day starter fermented feed, but they do like the 24 hour fermented (yes, I'm sure it's fermented) after it's already started (back slopped).

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Well, the wet feed is just as new as the fermented. lol Anyway, the reason I ask is because the flax seems to make it discolored and smell funky. If I put a lil excess water, the water layer at the top turns a dark brown. Guess I just need to get used to it too.

I changed because the Flock Raiser my local TSC carries is always old and the layer is much fresher. The layer was two weeks old while their Flock Raiser is anywhere from 3 months to a year old. :he

Does anyone ferment Purina Layena Plus Omega-3? Does it seem to get funky when it's fermented? My girls will eat it wet, but once it's fermented they want nothing to do with it. Hasn't been an issue with the Flock Raiser I used previously.

Either or, it doesn't really matter if you use the liquid or the feed to backslop.

Just note that a one to one ratio will get pretty rank pretty quickly if you see temps in the high 80s to 90+ range without a/c. If you live without a/c (as I do), in the summer months it's a good idea to keep it a bit wetter. Just add dry feed as you serve it if your birds won't eat it soupy.

If it's too thin for the birds, you can always add a little dry feed just before you serve it. My birds won't touch it if it's soupy. They shake their heads like they have gunk on their beaks before they even touch it. :sick

I've noticed with the rising temps that my girls won't touch feed that's been fermenting for more than a day. I've started making a single batch in the evening, feeding it out in the morning. In the cooler months they would scarf it down after 3/4+ days of fermenting.

Does anyone ferment their grass or other greens? I know some farmers will ferment grass for their cows. I have a lot of wild sage & other herbs growing on my property. I wonder if it would be good to ferment it for the chickies? Maybe chop it up & add it to their jar of fermenting feed?
