BRILLIANT! Both the pickle jars from the school caf and plastic pitchers. I liked the way yours looked with all that good stuff in it. I used to sprout for my domestic birds; in fact, I still have a sprouter. I never thought of that for the chickens. I used to get Mung beans and all kinds...
Well, that's what I thought but you know what happens when one assumes! That's why I have such a great "flock" to learn from. My 4 Ameracaunas are really growing. It seemed they wouldn't be as big as the other hens, but wow! Such beautiful and smart birds.
I take it you have several gallon jars! LOL! Did you have to buy the jars or eat a mess of pickles? Where do you get longnecker? At first, my hens gobbled it down but now, they aren't as interested. I filled their feeder with layer crumbles and they attacked it. I'd like to try your...
21hens-incharge,
Pardon my ignorance but how do the hens get the feed? Do you hang the bucket and use the chicken nipples? I would think they'd plug up but again, what do I know? But I've learned so much not only from this thread but the site itself.
My chickens go cuckoo for corn. Maybe you could try topping off the FF with something they really go for. If that works, they'll have to dip their beaks in in order to get to what they like and at some point, they'll get a taste of the FF. They may still hate it. Maybe it's unfamiliar to...
I was surprised to read that chickens would eat BSS. Are they physically able to shell them? I have a Timneh African Grey Parrot. Her beak is designed to shell anything. I currently have 6 hens that have taken to the fermented feed; they still do quite a job on the crumble in the coop! How...
I use layer feed crumbles. I bought molasses, plain yogurt, etc., to add to their dish. For me, cooking is boiling water for tea! But I'm a gourmet chef for the chickens.
This forum has been so helpful. I had never heard of it until my 'chicken mentor' mentioned it. I made my first batch of fermented mash ever and the ladies LOVE it. Does the mash have to be refrigerated at some point? I don't want any bad cooties growing in there.
