Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Texas is so big and weasels so few, that a state park could probably use one and would be a couple of hours away. I have heard from the state, my thread got me a private message to check outcome as my weasel is the only one reported in this area in years. Fort Worth is moving outward and...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Since chickens will eat rats and young rats, and the presence of rats draws weasels, I think the above snippet, horrifying though it may be, is relative to the discussion, and certainly to the way that I manage my property and predator issues. If my birds eat a dead rat or portion of it and...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

I keep a rat trap in the greenhouse where the weasel slipped in when the chicks were in it. Have caught 3 large rats in it so far. before I closed the window for winter. This stuff is pretty interesting. I think I'm going to build a barn owl nesting box and hope to get one to move in. A weasel...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Well people dump cats out here too, but I feed a bit of dog chow on my front porch, and I trap them and get them fixed so they don't reproduce, and the one that I got fixed 2 years ago kinda deters the others out of my yard. You do what you want, but personally I like cats better than people...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

funny, I've only MAYBE lost a chick to a feral cat one time and that is when I left a ladder near my run when it wasn't quite closed at the top. I have feral cats all over. I don't shoot them, I get them fixed. They kill weasels and rats, and really don't bother my birds at all.

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Thank you. I'm still not assuming it's forever gone. Given the wildlife count around here I need good fencing anyway, but for weasels and things that can and do climb, I need really tight chicken pens. Free Range is out of the question except within the fence and supervised, I've lost 4 cats...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

I've seen the weasel slipping across the back road 2 years ago, brown, not the right color or movement for a cat, legs too short, long tail, so when I googled last year I found it easily - long-tailed weasel. It was cool weather when I was walking the dogs and saw it in the distance, But it's...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Wow, the pest-chaser and nite-eyes both look like excellent things to try. Since I really tried to trap the weasel without success this summer. And if I catch one, how many more are out there? I just want my chickens to be safe. Thank you.

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

There are minks, fishers and weasels. I have never seen a mink or a fisher, but I have heard of them from northern friends. Weasels hereabout are brown, with black/white facial markings on one kind. That little tail could be mink, but then your question would be how big in diameter is the...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

I never did catch mine. But it didn't like me leaving my dogs out to guard the run while I was working on it. And I found where it had been slipping between layers of screening and chickenwire to get in vertical openings, and tightened all that up. Left an old bird in the run, locked the young 4...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Well the deaths have slowed down, but I lost another hen, in my main coop, on Monday night. Last time I brought my dogs in overnight was July 4th and I stuffed all the birds in the actual coop. I'd been over the run and didn't find openings, so I let the ladies stay on the perch in the run, it...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Well, the greenhouse is empty at last. My backyard coop no longer has openings a golfball will fit through, plus the dog smell has kept that part of the yard predator free for years. I have 3 dogs. They sleep in at night, but no predator has been brave enough to see if one of them might be...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Weasels are a blessing in the city, where rodent populations boom but chickens are few.

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

*except the rats. If the weasel is relocated to a city park, there are a few critters that will know it's there. They are nasty critters and carry everything from fleas to the black plague.

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

I used to live in town with a drainage pipe that was once a creek buried in the greenway behind my house. Zero predators. My little housecat did rat patrol for the neighborhood. We are talking hundreds of rats. No chickens though. and no weasels. If I turn it over to Animal Control it will...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

I have skunks, but I have had skunks for years. Get to be too many neighbor shoots or I trap and city collects. Skunks eat bees - so I have to keep a handle on them. Worse for the skunk than the chickens - dogs killed one in the backyard 1/1/2009 - heck of a new year. Dogs waited outside 3...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

Setting a rat trap under its entry point in greenhouse. Baiting my smallest, lightest have-a-heart with raw chicken and putting it under the chevy near where it goes over the fence TO the greenhouse. I have 3 big dogs, which tends to deter visits to my back yard proper, but the greenhouse is...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

No, I had luck at not losing more birds. Thawing a cull for bait, invasion by daughter and 4 grandkids, plumbing in kitchen sink has been dismantled, reassembled, determined the plug (probably straw from the chick waterer) is in the line a few feet from the house, Drano has failed. Dogs bathed...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

I'm told he can get in a hole too small for a golf ball, although the one I saw was Close to cat size. And that he will be back until I run out of chickens. Also that it is probably a she with a family to feed. So I guess a lethal trap Is needed. Raw chicken for bait. If I had caught it alive...

Weasel - gruesome detail warning. Need ideas to catch?

I may just tighten up my pens. I would rather relocate the weasel than kill it - but I would rather NOT lose anymore birds. I don't miss the rats it eats, that's for sure... Thank you all.
