Or the expense! Especially with "lavender" because the colour is so tricky to work with. I had hoped to work with lavender Ameraucanas. Purchased 30 eggs. Ended up with 2 small pullets after culling for crooked beak and all the other issues that seem to go along with lavender. Then I waited for...
I think we need to be prepared for negativity and criticism - especially from the APA. I believe that is part of their job has we go through this approval/inclusion process. It is their job to hold us to a standard. I don't take it personally at all. In fact, I got hammered by "folks" for taking...
Yes, it is a social excursion here, for sure -- but so much easier to navigate. I'm obviously just going to have to get to the right shows and meet more of you in person. Seems so much easier to navigate once I know a few folks.
Anybody going to Columbus next weekend????
I don't remember the exact specifics but I think you have to have something like a minimum of 5 breeders working on them for a specific minimum number of years and the numbers have to be out there being shown. A standard has to be written for the bird and then a qualifying meet held with a...
Wasn't it Jean that said cuckoos will never be approved in Ameraucanas because we'll never be able to get the leg colour right?. Something about the barring gene that conflicts with the leg colour we require or something to that effect? (I'm going from memory .... )

1. How old is she? What was she used to? What/where have you moved her into? Does she have company? (I could go on and on .... )
2. To find out if she is show quality, read about the Ameraucana breed characteristics and then...
This is what I have to work with -- the 2 Lavender pullets I kept (best of the worst) and my Black Ameraucana cockerel from Jean, If Jean is lurking on this thread I must insert at this point, Jean did not want me to keep this boy so you can't blame her for my choice but I like him. I hope her...
It's actually called "self-blue". You are correct about the even colour of grey. "Blue" in poultry usually shows a darker edging or lacing around each feather, and a darker hackle/head.
I REALLY appreciate this response! I have culled all the cross-beaks I hatched (I have no control over the parent stock) but the lavender birds I am raising (Silkies and Ameraucanas) I assume are at least partial siblings to my culls. I am a TOTAL newbie to chicken breeding - my plan with the...
Harry,
If you are willing, I don't think any of us would mind if you shared those thoughts with us .... I KNOW, I'd LOVE to learn ....
