When they hatch, they should have beards (see pic to left on my profile - that chick is about 1-2 weeks old). As far as gender, I have had no luck! Some people say by number of rows in comb +/- getting tail feathers in more quickly..
I will have some chicks hatching this weekend and should be getting chick boxes in. So, if you are interested in shipped chicks, I will have some! I'm in VT, NPIP-16
This is only my second year with the Lavs, and my second generation (will be hatching this spring). It has been a learning process! I do not think any bird is ever perfect. They can be near-perfect, but I'm sure there is always something to work on
The sire looks pretty nice to me. Kind of a big comb and poor muff/beard feathering (maybe only has single gene for beard/muff) - but that seems to be an ongoing issue with this color! I try to compare to pictures or images of birds that have either won at shows, or if you can find drawings of...
Definitely a cockerel!
Edited to add: He has nice coloring and wing set, his tail may be a bit high, but his neck seems to be really long and thin. His whole front end seems quite wimpy to me. But if he is nice - which my males tend to be - and quiet (they really aren't good at that, especially...
I should also say, some of mine feathered in with gold leakage. Or at least one male chick that I kept did. All chicks hatched black (I have a BCM, SS, and greyish EE in with my older Lav cock).
I don't completely agree with this. My cock bird from 2013 definitely has the sun burn/bleaching, but only some of the male offspring I kept are showing it. None of my hens or pullets get the same coloring. I would just be selective in the birds you keep if you continue to breed to lav. At some...
Anyone interested in a small LF cockerel? He is just over a year (hatched last March). I would keep him, but my goal for this year was to add some size, since my 2014 pullets all turned out a bit on the smaller side... I am willing to ship him but would need to get a box first. I am NPIP...
Here are my two breeding males for this year. My original 2013 cock bird and his 2014 son.
2013 cock-bird
#2, 3 - 2014 cockerel. He has a bit more body mass than his sire, something I am breeding towards.
2014 cockerel from same sire. Not a keeper, but just wanted to put his picture...
He looks young and therefore may change a bit more. I have some young cockerels who look like him. He doesn't have much of a beard (maybe single gene for beard?) and his tail is a bit high. I'm comparing him to the image on the Ameraucana breeder's page (http://www.ameraucana.org/) -
