No more deaths over night. They are so freaking adorable. One week old and they are getting tiny cute real feathers. Also they are not nearly as loud as we suspected. Kinda wish I got more...
So the one that was trying to die, who I am calling Crusty Butt seems fine now. Three others did die. :( Just magically, they didn't seem sick, just died. Apparently I'm terrible at this.
Edit: I misread my own post. Crusty Butt is fine, the one I almost drowned. The one who was trying to die...
One of my new ones is trying to die.
Oddly not the one I thought would. I spilled a ton of water and almost drowned one. This morning that same one had a crusty butt and I had to soak it in warm water, clean it, then cup it near the light till it felt warmish... But that's not the one laying on...
He got loose a few weeks ago and my dog got him. Then she didn't know what to do with him, so she just scared the tar out of him. He got scared for a while, wouldn't go in the run, so I'd bring him treats in the main coop. I guess that's when he fell for me. He hops into my arms now and stuff...
Okay, will they sleep with the light on? It's heated in here so I'm not so very terribly worried about the heat, but they seem to like it. I'm gonna use it, but not round the clock. Is there any chance they will chill out tonight though? Because it's a tiny house and they are LOUD.
I ordered 25. Plus the bonus rare whatever chick.
They subbed the one Black Star with two Red Stars
Then threw in the two Welsummer.
So 28 chicks.
15 are those Cornish X Rock whatevers... the meat birds. The rest should end up in my coop giving me eggs. If more than one is a rooster I will...
The green stuff is some crap Murray McMurray sent with them. Growth something. You put it for one day. They recommended the newspaper for two days, then pull it. It's apparently so they don't eat the shavings? I already spilled water all over it so now they are on the pages of a seed catalog...
It's too cold here to have them outside, we don't have a garage or even a shed with electrical or anything. So until they are old enough to turn off the lamp they are gonna just scream in my dining room.
Look what came today!
I was sure they were going to be out of the cuckoo maran but they had that one. They were out of Black Star and subbed two Red Star instead. A bit of a bummer, because the black are so prettier to me, but I'm happy. I also got two random free straight run Wellsummers...
Our chicks. They are almost 4 weeks old now. I had no intention of getting chicks. They were just so stinking cute. It's two RIR and five Araucanas. Seven. What the what? I meant to get five. Little jerks being all cute at me.
Their names are (as of today, my kids are in charge of this)...
