We use sand in our pens. We don't have "coops" per se. Living in SOCAL, we have open pens with part of it either covered with a plywood roof or tarp, where the roosts are. We have found that sand keeps the smell down and using a horse rake with 1/4" hardware cloth zip-tied on it acts as a very...

Sounds to me like you really got the problem covered and solved. I don't mind the little critters, but the big ones have caused us a lot of grief, in the past; snatching cats as well as chickens, turkeys, guineas. We also cover our pens/yards with chicken wire, because of the arial predators.

    Deep litter method

We have a 6 foot chain link area that is partitioned off for our chickens, ducks, guineas and turkeys. We also have coyotes, raccoons and birds of prey in our area, (a mated pair of coyotes and their pup live in a ravine that runs along our property). We have been unsuccessful shooting or...

    Deep litter method

Where we are, in the high desert, we don't have much in the way of coops. We have 5 different yards for our chickens, turkeys and guineas. Part of each yard is covered top and sides with heavy duty waterproofed tarps (where the feeders, nesting boxes, roosts and rooster closets) are located. The...
