    Growing fodder for chickens

I have been using over the counter peroxide for the chooks, and food grade for our table sprouts. I cannot find an MSDS or anything that says why one is food grade and the other is not, other than packaging. Am going on the idea that it's being rinsed 4 to 6 times afterward, and that's that. So...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I've been using about a tablespoon of peroxide to a cup of warm/hot water with my half cup of seed for about 20 min before the overnight soak... seems to work great on everything but BOSS... so I just rinse those again about every other day with a little peroxide in the rinse water. I figure if...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Are you referring to fodder? Fodder is sprouting grains to be anywhere from just sprouting, to full fledged greenery. So you need clean, untreated, seed that will sprout. When you say what works best, do you mean which type of seed? Usually what grows well in your climate, they'll eat almost...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Great use of space. Tomatoes I've only done once successfully indoors, one year we had a south facing window in CO Springs, CO. I tried it with lots of lights in the basement, that plant never set fruit. You'll want to find a hydroponics shop and you will be using lots of space blankets and...

    Growing fodder for chickens

That is FAB-ulous! Wish there was a mill near us. We've been doing FF and supplementing with fodder, 'cause for us, we can sometimes find a brewer who is going to throw out the 'spent' grain ... free food is THE best, I say! Welcome to the fodder thread!

    Growing fodder for chickens

I rotate between barley (feed store), lentils (food grade from CashnCarry restaurant supply), and what's left of my wild bird seed mix (BOSS, millet, etc.). Unless a bird seed mix specifically says it's been heated/irradiated to stop germination, it should work. What you choose may depend on...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Kassaundra, when you sprout inside the burlap bags (let me see if I got it): 1. you rinse in the bag, under HOT water... 2. Soak O/N 3. Rinse again in hot water 4. spread them out flat to sprout inside the bag. No more rinsing. The bags keep the seed moist; is there perhaps some antimicrobial...

    Growing fodder for chickens

It was a 48 hour soak... most people feed at between 4 and 7 days of sprouting. I tend to do high protein sources like beans and BOSS earlier, and grains later... JMO There's the Fermented Feed thread... thought I saw you over there? and if you make it thick rather than needing to let it filter...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Oats work for some, not for others. Mine kept getting moldy before I could use it, others have terrible germination. Make sure it's sproutable - if the store isn't sure, don't risk it. Some whole oats are treated with heat to keep it fresher longer, so won't germinate at all. I have better...

    Growing fodder for chickens

My barley does just fine at the same conditions, so must be an old batch, or treated some how? Any road, try fermenting it if they won't eat it 'dry'. Mine love it that way - one of my favorite threads: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/644300/fermenting-feed-for-meat-birds/9720#post_12161912...

    Growing fodder for chickens

LOL. I meant the food grade peroxide was from Amazon... I bought the barley at a sort-of (40m drive) local farm store... The other sprouted grains are from Stokes, I think.... will need to check with DH. He ordered them. I think if you head back to the beginning of this thread, there is actually...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I could order it through my co-op, but it's easier to buy it on Amazon, since we do a lot of our shopping via Prime there anyway. I'd rather do brick/mortar, but I get annoyed when it's not only more expensive, but larger quantities and waaayyy slower. I live in the weirdest area of WA I think...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Overnight usually works for me... smaller seeds like alfalfa/clover like we use for our table sprouts is an hour or two if you want to go that long. I'm currently experimenting with food grade peroxide for and initial 15 min wash on my fodder mix. I keep getting mold even when I rinse regularly...
