I think that is the very best way to do things. That is what I do as well. I am always trying to learn as much as I can, and then take what I learn and tailor it to fit with my setting and my birds.
I do somewhere in between the two. I get a slight root mat, but not real tightly twined, and about an inch or so of green grass in patches. I've also tried both sprouts and full on fodder, and mine seem to greatly prefer this in-between stage. I feed it out I think at about 5 days. I was...
In those temps you wouldn't get any sprouting at all, most likely. However, it doesn't smell if kept in the house in my opinion. When it starts getting some good green, it smells like fresh sliced cucumber to me. I love to just put my nose over it and breath it in. If it smells bad then...
I'm finally caught back up! I'm just now getting back to sprouting. I had so much going on I didn't have time or space for it for awhile, but I'm back on the bus now. I'll have the first bucket ready to feed out tomorrow. I know my boys and girls will be THRILLED. They have felt so...
The tomato fruit is perfectly fine to feed chickens, and most of them love it. However, tomato (along with potato) are members of the nightshade family and the green parts (leaves, stems) of them are toxic. They should never be fed to chickens.
I agree with WHmarans. I think back then the chickens were mostly allowed free range over the farm and most of their dietary needs they found for themselves. The cracked corn was likely just something for some extra calories and a way to ensure that the chickens remembered to come home to roost.
In a world without google I would be SO clueless. I don't even know how many times a day I will be talking or thinking about something and then think "I wonder...". So of course then I have to look it up, because I'm one of those gotta know people.
Yes veggeie seeds will work. But, you might have to experiment with them to find the best length of growing time for different ones, since many seeds have different germination times.
Ummm, I would say any plant that is bad for them the sprout would be too. I know tomato plants are poisonous...
The stuff I grow out I am just doing in the seedling starter tray things. I don't know how long those will last though, they are pretty brittle. So I'll probably look into getting plastic totes of a similar size or something when I can. Some of it I just take to the sprout stage in ice cream...
I have been reading and following this thread with great interest, but haven't posted anything here yet. Today I got such a nice surprise that I just HAD to share it. I've been trying to source some wheat to sprout for my chickens and ducks. So today I went up to our local elevator and asked...
