I mean, I think the issue is what are you wanting to compare fodder to? A pasture diet? A commercial diet? A whole grain diet? The studies and articles you are posting are all taking about commercial farming situations and I am not really sure how that information can translate well to a...
If I am reading this right you get less than 1.5 lbs of seed for about $25. (Am I reading that right?) That seems very very expensive and would last less than a week for me as fodder for my small flock. I am buying 25 lbs of organic wheat for only $22 and do a mix of grains at .3 lbs of seed per...
I have seen posts about this before and people have warned that the weavils eatting the feed changes the nutrition in that feed making it less. I haven't done any research on it but on the surface it makes sense.
hmmm. Interesting. I think it is interesting that their main point is comparing fodder to a dry materials diet which to me the point of growing fodder is to feed your animals a NOT completely dry materials diet and one that more closely resembles a forage diet. They do not make any comparisons...
I think whole wheat or wheat berries might be more accurate. I buy either red wheat berries from a health food store or white white berries from Azure Standard.
Sometimes they are hesitant to try new things so give it a try for awhile before giving up. Also, when are you feeding it. If you want to be sure they eat it give it to them in the morning when they are most hungry before you give them any food. They give them feed a little later. Look it over...
I think every person portion and ratio and going to be a little different depending on your set up and what else you feeding and your goals. I do .3 lbs of wheat barley and BOSS for 6 birds a day. I would just start experience and then adjust to the amount that works for you.
Me? Or someone else?
I use these: They are A LOT cheaper from Costco.

I drilled small holes in the bottom along one end and keep them at a slight angle so they drain well. They are pretty...
The only thing dirt does for your plants is add nutrients and give the roots something to hold onto--as long as you provide those things you can grow a lot of different kinds plants all the way to adulthood with any soil at all. Sometimes you can actually get plants to grow faster without soil...
Thank you! I am a city girl born and raised who really wants to be a farmer someday. But, I am getting sick of thinking "well someday..." so I'm just gonna work with what I got which is about 400 square feet of yard, a long concrete driveway lined with pots and trelesses and an extra bedroom...
I am silly excited about this. Plan to start this weekend. I am pretty new to urhan homesteading and am slowly planning and added new things. I recently started to grow some herbs and plants indoors with a grow light so I am added these into the mix. How long of a light cycle do you have them on?
Thank you so much for posting this. I have been wanting to do this for awhile and keep putting it off but you inspired me. I have my seed trays now and have tracked down some bulk seeds. (I live in the city so the options are kind of limited). I haven't found wheat but I think I am going to do...
