    Of course You can give anything to chickens, well most anything, I throw all sorts of stuff out in the compost, they will scratch through and find tidbits. I'm not sure how nutritious it would be, maybe it would be like Fermented feed!

    I think you should google feed stores all around and call them. surely there are feed stores that carry whole grains for feed. If they don't ask if they can order it.

    I think chickens are pretty sturdy. I'm no official, but my observations are, I've seen chickens scratching and pecking through cow patties. ( e.Coli in cow patties, ??)

    Hi Just checking in! I've been growing for about 2 weeks now. I have 12 hens. I use a cup of wheat, soaked 24 hrs, I put it in a Food storage container approximately 7" X 7". I have NO Holes. ( I couldn't bear to poke holes in them) 2 X a day, I soak each one for 5 minutes or so, drain off...

    DON"T throw away the fermented seed!! Chickens love it. There is a whole thread here on fermented feed.

    I can't find barley either. I think I saw some dish pans or containers at Dollar General for around $4. I didn't need ones so big. So I got the Glad food storage bowls, pack of 3 for $5. they had a larger rectangle one for 2 for $4.50. I was in a hurry to start so I didn't search it out...

    Jeronica, I just found whole wheat feed grade at a feed store for $12.50 for 50 pounds.

    jeronica, lucky you live there. I just started reading this post, got through to pg. 36, then skipped to pg. 313. I've been getting S&P for a few months now. I wanted to get started right away, and didn't have anything else. Although it does contain oats, and the posts say that doesn't do so...

    scratch and peck offers "3 grain scratch", which is whole grain, wheat, oats and barley. no rinsing or losing other nutrients, but still a little more expensive. I have that on hand and going to try it for the first time.
