Recently I dug out some rich soil from the chicken run for my basil, and guess what sprouted up? Barley seeds from the mixed grain scratch! I don't think I'll have any trouble with fodder, if chicken food grows than horse feed should too.
It is a small, short rectangular fridge which can run on gas - we call them box fridges. I'm pretty sure that you can change the temp but I'll have to double-check. The reason I mentioned this is because I'm in the tropics and don't want the fodder going mouldy. I read the ideal temp is 70...
I did contact them weeks ago but never got a reply. Important question: one of our family members is coeliac disease and cannot have gluten under any circumstances. Barley has gluten, would this be transferred into the eggs of fowl that eat it?
I'm thinking I may have to use a box fridge to...
I haven't tried it yet, just weighing out the risks. Here's the link to the product I would be getting: could I assume that this barley is not pearled or treated??

Great post, crazyaboutchickens. Quick question guys: what if the barley I get doesn't work? Will chickens eat it or will it be a complete waste? We can't afford to keep paying for fodder-growing mistakes. The barley sacks are $22 for 20kg.
I won't be starting just yet but when I do I will let you know how everything goes. The hens are in a run now, and they get a few hours foraging time several days per week. They eat fresh cut grass almost every day and are on layer feed. Their egg production is not the best right now but then...
OK, thanks for the info. I don't have a basement, but I think when I start my fodder I'll be able to manage alright. Hopefully if I spread the seeds out a little instead of heaping them thickly into the tray, they'll have enough room to avoid mould. I also read on another site that some...
I have accessed my local feed store online and found that they also sell bags of wheat - $7 for 5 kg. Has anyone found wheat to be better than barley, or should I stick with growing the barley? Any advice appreciated - thanks!
Costs:
Wheat
$7 per 5 kg
$1.40 per kg
Barley
$22 per 20 kg...

Wow! That's what I call savings! Thanks SproutGuy.
Yep it just says barley. I’m not going to get any yet because I’m planning on starting a fresh laying flock of 16-20 chickens next year. Right now I only have 4 so giving them greens from the garden is not a big deal, but the fodder...
Oh, sorry guys - one other question: the 20 kg bags of livestock barley available in my area are $22 each. However the layer feed I use is $29 for 30 kg. Does this difference in cost per kg defeat the purpose of growing fodder, or is it still worth it to give it a try? I've done the math, but...
Thanks for replying so quickly! I was just wondering, because we may move to a larger property and have room for more animals. In those circumstances, a fodder system would be useful. I didn't the reply to be a yes because I assumed that barley sold for livestock (particularly horses) like...
Hi everyone, I have a question about barley. Can you use as fodder the barley sold for livestock in large bags? Or will it not grow? If not, where could I get some (not pearled) that can be grown?
