    Growing fodder for chickens

What is the temperature where you are growing your fodder ? It only needs 60-65 degrees. If you get up in the 75 degree area, your chances of mold go way up....mold loves warm, moist places. Also, add a capfull of bleach to your seed soaking in water the first day, before your seeds go in...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Once you put a hole in a galvanized pan, it will start rusting out. Rubbermaid 4 5/8gal plastic dish lugs are $7.93 from Amazon, and will never rust. Heavy plastic, easy to clean, and very durable. IF you want something that will last for many years, this is it...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Yep....local farm co-op here has wheat at $13.50 for 50lbs and barley for about 18. I figure about pound or so (dry seed) a day is more than enough for my 16 chickens. 100lbs would do all winter.

    Growing fodder for chickens

I'd think red clover would be fairly expensive......the seed is a couple bucks/pound here. Rye should work just like wheat. For those that don't have a cheap local source, you can get 50lb bags of wheat (all kinds) from http://hop.honeyville.com/products/grains.html/ It runs about...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Seeds only.....no media is required. Simply dump soaked seeds in any kind of tray that will drain, then wet them down 2-4 times per 12hrs, and you'll get fodder. This is really SIMPLE. Only other requirement is temperature needs to be in the 60-65 degree range. Below that, it slows way...

    Growing fodder for chickens

That was a concern of mine before I used it. My guess is the 396/gal/hr rating is with NO lift....just flat out level with the pump. The pump is rated at 6.5' of lift, and mine is probably about 5' above the holding pan the pump sits in, and I can tell you it isn't doing anything like...

    Growing fodder for chickens

The Titan pump I listed on pg 304 of this thread will let you set up to 8 different On/Off settings per 24hrs, with any length of run from one minute onward per cycle. About $16 from Amazon or other sources.

    Growing fodder for chickens

I drilled 8 1/8" holes per side (16 total) in the copper pipe "T" ( part that is directly over the top tray ). I also put a valve inline about 1/2 up the back, and I keep it cracked about 1/2way open. I do that to cut the volume of water, more to keep the trays from overfilling before they...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Not really. The above post is a copy/paste of what I posted over at HomesteadingToday several weeks back. Since then, I find it takes about 5 minutes/day to pull a tray out to go to the chicken yard, refill it with pre-soaked seed, and put another bucket to soaking for the next day. We have...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Homebuilt Fodder growing system OK, after experimenting with some seed flats on the kitchen counter top, I decided to set up a full blown automated watering system to grow fodder for my chickens this winter. Total amount in the system is about $175. Bought 150lbs of wheat for feed stock from...
