SORRY TO BUTT IN LIKE THIS. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. This below is a reply to a pm from Bog Town, but thought I'd put it here and see if I can get a response. I love my roo so much that the alternative is almost unthinkable. Bogtown Chick Mar 18, 2013 at 9:40 pm Hi Miss Chickabee: just...

WINTER DAMAGED and (hen-pecked) This is what Boaz looked like before I went away for a week. (but of course, this pic was last summer) And this is Boaz after being hen-pecked. I was shocked. Ventilated coop. I use vaseline or bag balm on his comb and wattles. Still... SO this is...

BTC!! So very fun to know I have a chicken ally close by! We are actually midway between Walker and Bemidji on 45. Guthrie. Thanks for the newsy reply and the links which I'm going to head over into now. As for the old-timers. I love 'em, too. Especially Bee Kissed. Her rescue site...

Good point. My roo is a Marans about a year old now. Saw him sound the hawk alarm once. It was almost a bad day in their then-topless run. They did stampede the coop door. Maybe he'll do the job. I'd worry about the Orp girls out of the run. Just found this from the home-page. (Sounds...

Hmmm. I don't doubt they can find food. I'm more concerned about their ability to dodge predators. Someone on BYC from the south said Orpingtons were too slow to hide. Our property borders up to hundreds of acres of DNR and county land that is wild, wild, wild. We live in the woods. We've had...

Also, just wondering if anyone would know how Welsummers would do in the cold of northern MN winters. I understand they are good foragers...which Orgpingtons are not.

Hello BTC (Bogtown Chick) ( from down the road past Laporte. ) Had a "duh" moment when I read what you wrote here. My poor Marans roo has frost-bitten wattles but I never thought about the wet fermented feed causing that. Thanks for the heads-up. I have been transitioning over to dry...

Well, that makes good sense. I have not ordered eggs, yet, but the one person I know around here who did ended up with WAY too many roosters.

Carmen, you're welcome. This forum is totally addictive. I don't have so much time to come here as I used to because non-chicken life has claimed me back. So glad you're here. It's going to be a blast for you! Cheryl

Hello Mis pollitos I have friends in Stillwater that have told me your ordinances allow for more than most. You're blessed. I guess to help you I would have to point you first of all to my favorite coop design site on BYC. It's...

I'm glad to be disabused any rumors. Have and anti-cougar advice because the sitings are getting more frequent around here. (Bemidji area)

Hi Heidi, Interesting that you're bringing up the cougar subject. My understanding is that these were not native to our area but that the DNR brought them in for deer population control. Without consulting the public....and have now put us and our children in danger. Friends around...
