I usually clean the loft every day. It was just to darn cold that morning and after handling my camera my hands seemed even colder. I should have taken a picture today it is 32F and warm and the loft is clean.
It has been -10F around here not factoring wind chill. However we Canadians are...
I never met the guy but there is a fellow around named Rusty Nail apparently.
I honestly think the Styrofoam cooler was the difference in the pair of these squabs making it this far. We had some cold nights with temperatures plummeting below -10F. I think one squab at best would have survived...
Jack & Frostie at 21 & 22 Days Old. They are out of the Styrofoam Cooler nest box now. I should have cleaned this breeding pen BEFORE I took this photo.
With winter upon us these young birds will only have training toss on single digit frigid days. In about 3 to 5 more weeks.
Took these pictures this morning.
Jack & Frostie are now 13 & 14 days old.
Doing well in their Styrofoam nest box.
I seem to be getting a lot of brown in some of the offspring of my White Doves??
I know pigeons are a hearty lot for sure!
Just wondering if you remember any fool birds hatch squabs in December like my pair just recently have??
Michigan I would imagine you know what winter is all about!
I gave in to grand daughter demands somewhat; This if the nest box for Jack & Frostie not exactly as shown but pretty close (smaller entrance is all).
I will remove it once they are fledged.
.I should have know pheasants love Styrofoam as much as chickens!
Canada Squabs Jack & Frostie 6 and 7 days old respectively. Eyes are open now. Hatched December 27 & 28 2012. Temperatures today -20 wind chill -34 Celsius and continuing for 6 more days No Heat, No light No moisture NO PROBLEMS!
I would let nature take its course laughingdog. Sounds like they are as healthy as a trout. I live in Canada and have new squabs that just hatched December 28th. I placed a Styrofoam meat tray under the nesting material. We had -16 Celsius temperatures and the squabs are doing fine; their eyes...
Well according to my inside outside thermometer
the mercury plunged down to -10.8C = 12.6F .
The squabs Jack & Frostie survived with no problems.
The youngest is now 1 day old!
My pigeon egg hatched on Dec 26 or 27. The other one has pipped and should hatch Dec 27 or 28. Things look good so far. Will provide pictures tomorrow if I can get my camera to work in cold Canada.
Oops! Just noticed you are a Bluenoser. I think you have had a good taste of winter over the years! I live in New Brunswick. In the winter months I mix in a little rabbit pellets and maybe some wild bird seed just for variety. Through the spring & summer months it is just mainly layer pellets...
I just had a pair of pigeons lay an egg a few days ago. You probably think I am cruel hearted by not suppling heat. The reason I would not supply heat out to the barn is. The heat would cause my adult birds to become dependent on it. Then if and when the power should go out for what ever reason...
