Welcome to the world of Brahmas! They are rarely protective, although they will raise an alarm. At 21 weeks, he doesn't really know what he's doing (I'm surprised he's trying, mine usually are about 7 mos before they are "interested"). That is the reason for his clumsiness, I don't usually...
I put the extra cockerels at about 10 mos - 1 year old in the freezer. I sell any females that are still laying and that I'm not going to breed to people looking for layers. Right now, the oldest hen I have is 2 years old, the rest of the breeders/layers are just over 1 year old. My plan is...
Yes, males are males. You can always just repost it in your own words if you'd like.
A couple of things that I do to ensure that my males aren't aggressive. I never let them mate in front of me, that is a sign of disrespect. I'm never the first to break eye contact or turn my back if they...
Most of the time you'll have to do it a few times before they get it.....sometimes they don't get it no matter how much you try and then they belong in the freezer, not in your flock IMHO. I haven't had to do it often, but the few times I've had to do it it's worked.
You have my permission to...
If you ever get a chance to watch two males arguing over the females, you will see that the winner stands on the losers back, pushing him into the ground. Usually he grabs the other's comb as well, almost in a mating stance. The one pushed into the ground has to be submissive, or the argument...
It is probably never a good idea to tease a cock bird, even one that in the past has been particularly gentle. You will need to reestablish your dominance over him, don't need to beat him but back him down whenever he comes after you. If you run or squeal you will only make him more dominant...
What's wrong with my slippers? LOL.
Yeah, he imprinted on me for sure. I put him with the rest when he was about 6 weeks old, and he won't let me handle him easily anymore, but as soon as he sees me coming he starts pacing the fence, clucking at me and thinking that I'm his girl. Sigh. If...
Why does it scare you? I have very few cock birds that are aggressive and any that are find themselves in the freezer sooner rather than later. One thing to keep in mind, make sure that he understands that you are the alpha....not him. I have 18 cocks/cockerels right now and only one that on...
I've used them before. They don't seem to help as far as I'm concerned. I think they help with the shoulders more than with the back. Anyway, I don't recommend spending the money on them. I rotate the hens around so that they get a break, but the heat seems to be taking the urge out of the...
I feed outside just to keep the mice out of the feed. I also didn't really design my coops for feeding inside. I don't usually have any trouble with wild birds, although right now I'm having a serious problem with a wild turkey....I've never seen one down here before, can't imagine where she...
There are so many feed choices, depending on where you live. Just read the ingredients. My birds can tell the difference. They eat the Purina, but don't necessarily love it. They LOVE the Nutrena. Where you live there may be some additional choices, especially if there is a feed mill nearby.
I agree on the Purina, but unfortunately, it is the only choice here besides Dumar, which I really don't like at all, until they are old enough to go on the Nutrena. For some reason, our TSC only carries the Nutrena for adult birds, not for the youngsters.
Mine come to the bag of meal worms...
One thing to remember with Brahmas is that they are slow growers, so when you read the back of the bag of feed you have to take that into consideration. If the bag says to feed to 10 weeks, make it 16-20 weeks for brahmas, if the bag says 20 weeks (most other chicken's laying age), it is 40...
Sexually mature, 8 mos (start laying). Height should be done at 1 year, although I've had some keep growing after that. Weight usually at about 15-18 mos. Generally speaking, mine keep growing until they are at least a year old...most of the time 1 1/2 years old. A lot depends on feed, a...
Buff brahmas, the ones in the box are probably pullets is my guess. Look like probably hatchery stock, but it is hard to tell at this age. I'm going strictly based on the heads that I see. Does that answer the question?
A good example of how the saddle feathers are coming in and the hackle isn't quite developing yet. I generally don't see hackle start to really come in until they are reaching sexual maturity, about 8 months old. There will be some hackle developing, but it won't be obvious.
