I tried... made them a nice pen on rubber stall mats (no chicken poop or worms!), but they just stood together all huddled up and cold, so I brought them back in. It's supposed to be warmer this week, so maybe I'll try it again.

I can't swear by it, 'cause I didn't have my glasses on, but I think that there was a fertile bullseye on that egg. I tried to get pictures, but they came out too fuzzy. I'll check the next two that I cook and take better pictures of them.

I think I can finally say that my hens are done laying! This is what I did with one of the eggs.
Huge egg!
Next to Muscovy egg
Over easy on a bagel with smoked salmon, avocado and capers.

My last chick to hatch hatched one month ago and I can't believe how little it still is... Need to weigh it today and see how it compares to the others.

Guess what? My stupid 4 year old hen laid another egg! Good Lord, I think that brings her total to something like 35 eggs this year, probably more (96 eggs from three hens, but one of the hens didn't lay more than 15-20)!

The 2013 season is officially over for me as my last egg did not hatch. Now it's time to digest what I've learned and come up with a plan for 2014!

I still feel for you on that one. One thing I learned this year is how to spot a chick that will die in the egg unless helped and this one would have died in the shell if I had done nothing,

Here is the chick after I moistened the membrane and made a a hole for it to breath. Look close and you'll see it's foot on top of it's head.
Here it is 16 hours later

FWIW, when I candled the one I could see where it was trying to pip internally, so I made a small hole and saw that it was shrink-wrapped. Once I moistened the membrane I could see that it had a foot over it's head, so I broke the membrane and cleared the area around it's beak. There was still...
Thanks, but it's okay and it gave me a chance to get some good pictures of one that was malpositioned and not shrink-wrapped. Of course I'll post them later, lol.
