Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I might have to get some Turkeys! lol. Haven't lost any birds to disease since the sebright, only one to a dog. :/. Some of them have shown symptoms, but never succumb, and as has been stated, mareks can look like so many other ailments!

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Death of 1st bird this year due to mareks this year. Considering I had 14 new birds, not bad odds. It was my little sebright hen. Started with gasping, then she went lame, both symptoms went away, but she wouldn't gain weight.. Finally fell asleep and didn't wake up again. Glad the poor girl had...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Update: little sebright hen has moved into the basement. Labored breathing, repeated gassing and sneezing, losing weigh dramatically. Eats a lot, but not gaining it back. Went lame a few days ago, but regained her ability to walk. Put her on Baytril, slightly higher dosage with no results...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Thank you for the response. She's holding in there. But I'm not hoping for the best. I'll finish her dosage of baytril just to cover my back. I'm aware of the facts behind carrier birds, etc. I've had some birds for 4 years, and bought from a breeder where he most likely had mareks, and have...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Long story short, I just finished moving and think the stress may have made mareks show its ugly head. My sebright hen has gone down hill very quickly. She is losing weight dramatically and walks around wth labored breathing, feathers fluffed, and eyes closed. I thought she might have gape worm...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

So, The Cochin that was acting off... 2, 3 weeks later is still acting off, but managing on his own decently. we'll see if he makes it. I have another rooster that I'll be putting on meds. His legs seems to be extremely weak legged. Can't even eat standing up. walks a few paces, lies down, etc...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Proud Army Wife, I'm so sorry that you're going through this, it's never easy... however, as callous as it sounds, the first one is always the hardest, and then is get slowly easier. I bawled my eyes out the first bird I culled because of mareks, and slowly the tears have lessened with each bird...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I'm so sorry! My Cochin is hanging in... He's just kind of "there" eats a bit, walks a bit, sleeps a lot. My silkie is keeping him company since she can't really keep up with the rest of the flock anyways

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

He's acting... Ok. Walking around, hanging out with the slower birds, but not eating or foraging. Glad yours are starting to act better, and I know, it's always so hard to cull a bird.

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Looks like I will be struck by mareks this year. Ironically, with a chick I bought, not one I bred. Woke up today with my bantam Cochin Panting and fluffed up in the corner of the pen. Picked him up, no struggle, and felt him. Looks like he hasn't eaten from the last few feedings, because his...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Oh I know it's hard hearted, but honestly, I've come to the point that if A bird shows symptoms, I'm more apt to cull it then to try to make it recover. I have a hen right now that is showing symptoms of ovary cancer, trying to make a date to cull her... It's hard, but in my case the most...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Basically. He lost a lot at the beginning, now he only loses a few a year. From hearing talk of people losing their birds, and the symptoms, I have to assume that mareks is very prevalent where I am, BUT, it seems to be a fairly weak strain, so breeding for resistance is almost more feasible...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I'm sorry for all these people losing birds.. Not to rub salt into a wound, but this is the first year that I haven't lost any birds before 10 weeks! Keeping my fingers crossed that they might for once all make it. The birds are from a breeder that has had mareks for generations, so I had a...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I have a mama possum around my house. My coop is NOT predator proof, but all it does is walk around to see if there's a door open, then leaves. It's gotta be the least persistent predator I've seen. No drive to break in if its going to take work! Lol

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

Well, ordered baytril three days ago from that Mexican company. Hasn't been shipped yet though... Hoping the chickens don't get worse before it comes. How long does it usually take? Has anyone notice that with chicks that are hatched into mareks, they seem to have delayed growth? My chicks are...
