You know, they would probably be ok, but they can get bullied pretty bad form the full-grown chickens. When you add them, it disturbs the pecking order they have already established. Even though these new chicks aren't a threat, the chickens still need to drive the point home that they are...
I ordred them as soon as they were able to be ordered, which was January 2nd. They gave me a shipping date of Feb 10, based on the hatch dates. They arrived promptly on Feb 11, well packaged and healthy. Did they give you an estimated shipment date?
We have Easter Eggers, Silver Laced Wyandottes, and Rhode Island Reds. My favorite so far are the Easter Eggers, and they lay blue and green eggs. Keep an eye out for those, they have great personalities.
Thanks very much! We work full time, so I want a safe place to let them into every day, and then when we're home we can let them into their bigger fenced in pen.
That looks like a Buff Orpington if I've ever seen one.
I wouldn't be worried. Just like any baby, they need rest, some need more than others. Watch for them becoming listless and disoriented all the time, that's a bad sign. But if they are sleeping a lot, and active and eating and drinking, that's probably a good thing!
Nice! My girls are getting big too, 4 1/2 weeks right now. I'm thinking of moving them out to their coop with 2 heat lamps set up. What do you think? It's around 32 every night here in Rhode Island, but with the heat lamps I'm thinking they should be ok?
Yeah, they got big quick! I'm going to start building their enclosed run this weekend, weather permitting. They have taken over a guest bedroom, and even though they're only 3 1/2 weeks old, I think I might put them out in their coop a little early, with a heat lamp... maybe when they're 5...
Everyone's chicks are looking great! Mine are getting so big, they're about 3 1/2 weeks old now, and loving their brooder. They just went on a field trip to see the grass and the sky for the first time. They were a little overwhelmed until they got used to it, then they were scratching around:
So this one is a RIR that has the most feathering:
And here is their new setup- an old shower curtain with pine shavings and chicken wire. They have been in here for one week:
