Another update---sadly, the hen died after two days of the metronidazole. I continued with the Tylan while I waited for the Baytril, but didn't get it in time. I'm treating all of the birds in her flock with the metronidazole, and hope to never see this again! Thought about getting a necropsy...
Update---tried to take pictures, but it was obvious that we were making her breathing worse...the yellow, cheesy-looking stuff in the cleft of her beak is gone, replaced with black stuff. Black, crusty stuff around the inside of her mouth also. Breathing is a little worse tonight, after a full...
It's not just the sinuses, though---it's in her lungs and throat as well. And not in her eyes. I guess my only course is to have it cultured, but that may take too long...
Yes, if it's viral it should run it's course (in this one chicken, at least) within two weeks...but I'm not totally convinced it's pox. The similarities between the two have me confused---both involve the respiratory system, both have lesions, etc. In fact, I've seen pictures of both that look...
I will try to get a good picture later today, I only have a bunch of fuzzy ones...her symptoms are as follows: yellow, cheesy-looking hard substance on roof of mouth (beak), black discoloration of mouth and throat, wheezing and and rales, green, runny droppings. There is some wet discharge...
Thanks so much to you both! I'm looking at my chicken medicine chart and I see metronidazole, but not dosage or methods? I'm currently treating with Tylan200, but I think it's actually canker and not an URI---how long do I wait after I stop the Tylan before giving the metronidazole?
