A great science question I'd like to know is: does it matter how long to soak the seeds! 12 hours or 24 hours? Or, does watering 3x or 2x or just once per day affect growth?
Lots of thoughts but little scientific investigation.
My 8 birds devour the sqft that I make for them in less than ten minutes.
I think that in the summer I'm going to go hog wild and basically reseed their whole run. They'll wake up one morning and the barren run will be all green again. ;)
I'd water less, plus check that the room has good airflow, and possibly it's too warm?
Some people wash the seeds with a very mild solution, but I'm too organic for that.
Id suggest at least overnight. then rinse as often as u'd like. My experience suggested that light isn't useful until they are actively growing and you want to green them up.
Oats are VERY slow to sprout, but taste (according to my sampling) way sweeter than barley, which sprouts super fast.
Bulk foods seeds may sprout, but likely much more $ than the feed store.
Other details I may have left out, seeds soak for 12-24 hours, get rinsed, b4 going into the bottom tray. I fill the top with water morning thenagain at night (I forget lots and its fine btw). Seeds are about a half inch deep.
Here's a monster fodder thread for more info...
Barley is the absolute fastest to start growing, but not the best tasting. Oats are great tasting but much slower to sprout. BLack Oil Sunflower Seeds (boss) are also popular to sprout.

They devour the whole thing, roots and all! Aside from being healthy for their diet, it makes a big dent in the food bill. The roots grow into a mat and pulls out just like inthe photo.

Here's my extra simple fodder system, for those of you who don't know fodder Is basically grass. I use a mixture of barley and oats.
It makes perfect sense when this is what it looks like outside for 5+ months of the year
I use four stacking trays. Here they are collapsed as they normally...
