Barrel of water works too. Dump the whole cage in and walk away for 10 minutes. That's what I do with smaller animals, might take a big barrel for a large coon tho. Safer than shooting them and easier on the trap too. No easy solutions.

I think if you set a trap you have to be willing to dispose of the animal asap. Maybe you need to get your own gun, have your dad teach you to use it if need be. I don't intend to sound mean either, sometimes life...and death...is rough.
