:lau I could imagine it now! The vets could open a euthanization butcher shop where each chicken was separately euthanized.... :lau Regards, Leaf

Oh, sorry, I was also wondering the same thing, but you can never be sure! I was imagining someone taking thirty or forty meat chickens to the vet to have them euthanized... :lau Regards, Leaf

I agree, do not let them suffer, but euthanizing them chemically isn't practical for those who keep many meat chickens. A sharp axe of killing cone is much more efficient. To each his own though. :) Regards, Leaf

I would be counted as an austringer I suppose, as I'd be hunting with Hawks. I love animals, but there is a certain balance we must maintain, even if it means hunting. Personally, I prefer hunting with birds, but have no problem with other methods for food or supplies. I am not so supportive of...

I see, guess I wasn't thinking it through. Do you hunt with a bow and arrows or a gun? I hope to hunt with red tailed Hawks soon. (Falconry) Regards, Leaf

You pulled their heads off? Or am I missing something? How did you manage that? Regards, Leaf

You could always sell them on Craigslist or at a local supply shop. If you post an add at a feed store you may get some takers. You can also post on here in the In need of free rehoming section with pics to see if there will be any takers here. ;) Regards, Leaf

I think severing the head may be a little much for some, but I find it less stressful for the birds, so I may try this technique. Regards, Leaf

Great post Beekissed. This is the case much of the time I have found. When my father was young in the nineteen hundreds, he spent a lot of time on his relatives' farms. Killing chickens, cattle, pigs, and such was very normal there. My father didn't spend long enough there to fully realize how...

Oh, I don't mind the bleeding out at all! I was just curious. Thank you for such a informative answer, I got a lot of things cleared up. I have to agree, chickens have natural instincts, but we make them human. It is great to be able to discuss this topic so civilly. On other forums this would...

Bleeding out...I'm surprised that animal rights activists don't jump all over people for that. I have no problem with it and would use this method but I've been berated by "tree huggers" when I tell someone I will soon raise chickens for meat, or share my thoughts on hunting non predatory...

I think the hatchet may be the best way to go after some reading. I don't think it's really that easy to mess up, and if you do, you can just take another swing. In the meantime, I need to get me some deer! Does anyone use the hatchet successfully?

Well, if I kept Cornish Xs as meaties, they wouldn't really live long enough to become obese and lose their quality of life. They would be butchered relatively young. I commend you for being vegetarian Free Feather, but couldn't do it myself. I am too human, I suppose. Anyway, I hope to get my...

Free feather, do you keep chickens for meat? If so, what kind? I've heard that Cornish X's are some of the best meaties, but what about others? Do you happen to know any interesting breeds that dress well?

Oh no, I am no saying they lack emotion, not that they do not recognize death, I certainly didn't mean to come across that way. I was simply responding to another post about how chickens can be emotionally scarred when they see other chickens slaughtered. Believe me, if they felt this way they...

Exactly. Most chickens will eat birds that have been slaughtered.

Well, I'm glad things worked out for you regardless. I'm sure if they are for meat that they will be slaughtered humanely. I am still in the process of educating myself about meat birds, so we can learn together I suppose.
