I have a black AM roo, and @samouw and @ravynfallen do to. I had BBS with a black hen in the mix originally and have had no trouble with black. Now my blues not having leakage is another story...

    Blue Ameraucana thread!

I just meant for me. They are looking very female and foot size helps me with Ameraucanas if I'm not seeing anything else male. I'm sure it's not perfect but I've done at least 7 hatches and it's worked for me. Especially at the age they are in this photo. I can't speak for Wyandottes BC I...

It's very hard to tell this early on. The only thing that would help is the foot size- if there is a drastic difference. In your photos neither look like they have a male stance or saddle feathers so far.

You could ask on the LAV AM thread. Her head looks like a blue AM but she doesn't seem to have any lacing which could be LAV. I breed blues but just a few but mine are darker, so the LAV AM breeders are a lot more experienced than me.

Unfortunately, due to the willow legs, he is an Easter Egger. An Ameraucana must have slate legs to be a pure AM. He is very pretty though, and a rooster that barely crowd sounds like a keeper!

The gene works differently, LAV is recessive. Others can elaborate that part. The main difference that you can see is lacing. Blues have lacing, LAVS or self-blues do not. There are dark blues and light blues, -great variation, but the lacing is what sets apart blue from LAV. I had a blue...

They could have both been split for blue depending on if they were both LAV or not. Is this you're 1st generation breeding? or did they come from someone else?

They are almost impossible to sex until 12 weeks and later. You can sometimes get familiar with your particular strain and find common traits that tell you sooner. They are one of the hardest breeds to sex. I look for early challenging once they feather in. That's usually the only...
