None of my cockerels, if housed together while growing up, have ever fought seriously unless they are overcrowded. There is always sparring, and the pecking order will change constantly, but I only start to become concerned when one in particular is getting bullied/chased. I raise many cockerels...
Noticed that too. I know there is variation and there are both light and dark blues of both genders, but my female looked more uniform while the male got darker around the hackles and other areas. It could be...
Thanks for the BBS chart! It's a great reference. And definitely leg colour is something to be concerned with when looking at Ameraucanas. Is it possible your chicks were older than the one in the picture when you got them? I'm sure your chicks did look lot different than this one. I've noticed...
This gal looks like a dark blue or black. Not to worry, her legs should turn slate. The white belly will disappear as she feathers in. Meyer does sell true Ameraucanas. I have no idea as to their quality, but she looks normal to me! Blue and black Ameraucanas can have a lot or a little yellow...
In my experience, they aren't any different from any other rooster. They all crow. The frequency and volume, I've found, almost always depend on the individual bird and is hard to predict based on breed. Though my bantams sound kind of shrill, while my larger breeds have deeper voices. My...
Those are beautiful blues above!
I would like to hatch more. I only have one blue, a hen. She didn't start laying until the day after I filled the incubator with everything else. So I popped her single egg in anyway. It developed, but died at lockdown. When I opened it up, the chick was blue...
I had the same thing, but sold the smaller rooster. I wonder if Ameraucana hens take a lot of time to develop size-wise or whether mine simply have a size issue. They are no bigger than my EE who probably had a bantam father. After processing, I will be down to the 4 pullets and 1 rooster. When...
My LF BBS Ameraucana pullets are growing much slower than the cockerels, or else they are just really small. The black rooster is about twice the height. At 5 months the four pullets look nearly bantam size (and not mature because they aren't laying yet).
You don't see much mention of Ameraucana bantams. I've been trying to breed for at least a bantam EE. I love the pattern of the blue on this pullet. I'm curious; do you happen to have a picture of the eggs?
Stock from Ontario.
It's a little unusual, I looked at many pictures of splash and I had one chick that was mostly yellow. At almost five weeks it's clearly a medium/light blue! I have very one dark blue too.
Thank you!
I thought I had 1 Splash, 3 Blues, and 5 Blacks, but unfortunately I guessed wrong. My grey chicks I thought were blue are turning definite black, with maybe one exception. The splash is a light blue...when it was hatched it was silvery yellow with a blue saddle. Other chicks were...
I have a couple of questions - my BBS Ameraucana chicks are 2 weeks old. The darkest chicks have all slate legs at this point. Other chicks have light legs with a lot of black wash/mottling. Will they turn dark?
Secondly, what is the correct skin color for Ameraucanas? I was just reading about...
