I talked to a new found 70 plus year ole friend. He told me he was at the APA meeting in IL. And that their main concern for the Marans is the inconsistancy of the breeders.
What ever that means.

I wish it was just warm here! HA It is hotter than blue blazes! I couldn't even hardly stand to be outside the past two days!
yeah. you and i are in the same area, and we've all been under an extreme heat advisory for several days now, so maybe you have too? it's almost impossible to...

OH that is just not right. Nobody's allowed to beat up Bruno.
Pretty boy
Didn't think anyone would be dumb enough to mess with Bruno. lol
Up till now Bruno hadn't met anyone who would try. I guess R00 is one nasty boy.
Time has come to use R00ppert, a Kevin Jeanne C-1/Wade Jeanne, 7 months old cockerel. R00 has been fighting & BEATING UP BRUNO. Can't have that, so he has been permanantly moved to my Valentine/Buboltz lined bird's pen, in the shade behind the pole barn. Far from causing trouble. I...
I recently place an ad in Craigslist giving away free Black Copper Marans cock bird. And was lucky enough to place all three of my featherless leg boys. Including Gorilla Monsoon, I place these two boys this week. Now all rides on Abomidable's boys and Reggie's boy R00ppet.
Reggie gone...

Thank you gardengirl, he is originally from a local lady down in Nashville IN. Betty Jo Aldrich. He and his bro are my first Marans. I have 2 of Ray V's Birchen girls to take to him. They lay a lite egg. Bruno comes from a decently darker egg. Near 5 or 6 on the Marans egg color...
I just placed Gorilla Monsoon with a fellow UOC member and BYCer yesterday. Julie had Gorilla's brother last year, and wanted him IF he became available. Well he is happily over in his new home.
Adios Gorilla, have a great life.
A Kevin Jean C-1 egg I hatched last year produced Reggie...

you can turn your back on mine. Their very cool around me, great with the girls. And ALL girls get fertilized. I did minimal handling of my guys. And walking in their pen and not chasing them to pick them up helps. they trust me like I trust them. And they do their best to protect...

I have two (2 yr ole) males who have lethal spurs. Easily an inch long or longer. Those are the two boys who ran off a hawk, after that hawk snapped the neck of one of my best girls. Their nice size fellas

there really are so many things to work on aren't there? I like his short tail and compact shape though he's stretching his neck up. He's got the right beetle sheen in the right spots too. One thing that bothers me is all the long tails and that longhorn look. But admittedly, the dark...
Would this classify as sparsely? Cause this is a cockerel in the very same cage with the Marans boy. He too is a cockerel. Just not a Marans. The irony is the pen he is from, has laid super nice dark eggs IF your a Black Orpington. Dark enough to count as a #4. maybe I should explore the...

But, wait ..... I thought the proposed SOP calls for, "sparsely feathered," legs. ???
This is my first year with the breed. Just gettin a consistant breeding pair that lays dark eggs with birds that come out with feathered legs is a a priority along with size and color. Beggars...
I finally found my best breeding pair combo. An Amy Buboltz male I hatched last year, with zero feathers on his legs with a Ray Valentine, nicely feathered shank 11 month ole pullet who lays by far my best egg color. All the babies coming from that breeding are heavily feathered legs and feet...

Doesn't that sound fun? There's a Farmers Co-op in the county I live in and the produce from these Farmers is sold in the sheds and markets. Some of it is certified organic and some is just from local small family-run farms.
I am sure there are certifications or permits and rules you...

WoW, you got 4 to hatch? Did it, done it last spring. Bought some that were Bev Davis LINES, had them shipped over those big mountains out west, to have nothing hatch on a dozen eggs, wrote to the breeder, and agreed to send me another half dozen for shipping only. Got one to hatch...

Please don't get me wrong, there's alot of birds that don't meet alot of breeds standards. It just throws a huge curve when you have to meet both an egg standard and a conformation standard. And the egg standard is where the patience is. I won't know which cockerel is throwing the...

I have 5 lines from well known MOAC members. And the chicks that resulted from my initial breedings, I've had some Cuckoo's pop up, and in my local breeder's line some Birchens. I think these are things we have to deal with till we all get together and clean up our flocks. I am not...

I do a variation of the way Kathyinmo uses. I do start out with humidity up, then I let it drop to around 30% to 35% then add H2o and repeat till last three day. then I up it high. well over 55%. Today I had 10 eggs in the bator and 9 hatched.
