What is a lancet? I get what the hackle, saddle, shoulder and breast are, have had a heck of a time with finding what a lancet is for some reason. Anyone care to enlighten me, please?
I bought eggs from Ruth...yesterday was day 21...2 hatched out last night before bed. I have NEVER had a Marans hatch on day 21, they are all usually late. Hate being at work today...wanna be home with my nose pressed against the incubator door!!!

You are right...when you get started and do not have many to chose from, the pickings are slim.
I have 6 cockerels, in my oldest brood, 2 I KNOW are culls...they are at about 4 months of age. Of the remaining 4, I see 2 I know I will keep, the other 2 are not showing any color other...
Thanks nhnanna and onthespot...just so excited since they are my first. Guess that feeling fades when you have more pullets and have an established flock. Have more up and coming, but it will be a few more months before they start laying.
Next job will be seeing which cockerels to keep and...
Here they are...they are so much darker than the GCM eggs I get, the GCM pullet has been laying for over a month.
The light egg in the picture is a RIR egg, just for comparison. The picture was taken with natural light and no flash.
I just got my 1st BCM pullet eggs yesterday!!! I had been home sick so hubby did chores...brought in 2 eggs and said "Guess what...those pretty Marans finally laid eggs". When I get home after work I will post pictures. I thought they would NEVER lay...lol. Just need to wait for some of my...

Egg color is between 4-5 right now, they seem to be getting darker the longer she is laying; about 2 weeks now. Perhaps I will send the cockerel to freezer camp and put the pullet in with the younger BCM's. Thanks for the advice.
I have a Golden Cuckoo question to ask.
I have a pair of pretty light GCM, they are from the same hatch, she has just started laying and he is breeding...LOL. If I would cross the GCM cockerel with my BCM pullets, would this produce a darker GCM? Would I be better off just replacing the light...

If you are using 55% humidity at hatch what are you keeping it at from day 1 to day 18? I have been told from a couple of sources that Marans require less humidity during incubation...just trying to find out what works best for you so I might use that info on my next batch of eggs.

I actually go by color...the pullets are darker and the cockerels are lighter. They all have the light spot on the head but I am not good enough to tell by the position or shape to tell male or female from that.

Nope. it was Scott Krosch out of Kingsley. It is funny, the 2 blues are clean legged and the blacks are feather legged.
I am thinking I am liking the feather legged ones more than the clean legged ones...JMHO.

Sounds like you are on your way to having enough BC's to cull ruthlessly and make progress to what you are wanting in your birds. That is wonderful!
I agree that it seems with BBS the blacks do breed like bunnies...I got some BBS eggs from someone in Iowa and ended up with a majority...

My RIR lay an egg a day. I have not yet had the luck of having a broody, so used to the Hova...hehehe.
All of my Marans are way too young to lay yet. Next weekend I will have some BBS and BC Marans from onthespot that are due to hatch...so hope they do well. I can already predict...
Belinda,
Those are great pixs...have never thought to try doing that. Those are some big honkin' feet...lol
Glad to hear you have not had any more losses...Marans seem to be more "challenging" to hatch. Hope you have good luck with any others you have hatching.
Can't see from the pix...is...

Oh no!!! I am so sorry to hear about your loss. That just really stinks. Glad you found the source of the problem...just a shame you had to go through what you did to find out.

I have had something like this happen in the past. Chick is fine then it gets very lazy and just lays around before it starts panting, at that point it takes a very short time before they either roll over to their belly or back and then they die. I thought maybe they were too hot, not...

We had 30 mph winds today so everything was being blown around...not great pixs but I wanted some feedback on the coloring.
They are 3 months old so no eggs yet. I also have a golden pullet in with my mixed Marans and she is even younger, about 7 weeks old.
I know the older goldens...
