The Carroll county fair is in Hillsville, VA. Near Galax. I won't be showing since I'm NPIP and can't intermingle my birds with non-NPIP. But I might come and watch the chicken (and rabbit, I believe they're on the same day) shows.
I have Holland Lops as well. I have 22 out there I think... I lose count sometimes :bun
I'm a member of ARBA and show at as many shows as possible. Do you breed and show?, or just own them as pets?
I've heard this year particularly has been difficult for shipped eggs. I've also heard the Jacksonville, Florida PO hub is a mess. The Dom eggs I got from Florida arrived without any cracked eggs, but only one hatched so something is obviously off.
Why must hatching shipped eggs be so frustrating?? Second batch that I've tried and out of 20 eggs or so only 1 hatched. Shame I cant find any local Dominique breeders... and I know it's not the incubator as the eggs from my hens are hatching...
If you can find good pallets, sand them down real good, have a little know-how, and a fresh coat of paint you can do a whole lot with pallets! I'm planning on tearing apart a few pallets we have lying around to fix up our old hoophouse to put our heritage dominique flock in.
and welcome to the Virginia Thread! Hope you enjoy your BYC experience. About the coop, if you're able, it may be cheaper to build it yourself; and that way, you get it exactly the way you want.
I am having the hardest time trying to find nice type Dominique. Do any of you know any breeders. Dominique are supposed to be nice, upright birds with tails that turn up. The only ones I can find have that bulky producer shape to them. Most likely from the years of being mixed with other breeds...
I'm not familiar with any reliable swaps around here. There may be some, but people mainly do larger livestock. Most of the TSC's around here (Christiansburg, Galax) have been getting in trouble for having their swaps out in the parking lots. With Marans and Ameraucanas in particular, if you're...
Pretty! But I'd keep an eye on the one in the second pic. Is it a New Hampshire? I might be wrong but it looks like she's developing some wattles there. 'She' may be a rooster.
I know most people here are poultry folks. But there will be an ARBA rabbit show next Saturday and Sunday the 18th-19th down in Greensboro, NC. You don't have to be showing to attend. Just show up and have some fun with the rabbits, talk to breeders, or if you're interested look for some sale...
Where did everyone go? I haven't been here for a while myself but it looks like everyone else is gone.
Update for our farm: We are highly considering becoming NPIP certified. I hear it's kind of strict here in VA, so anyone have any experiences? Or tips?
Where did you two origanally get your Svart Hona? That would help if people knew so they dont give you birds from the same lines. Have you tried Greenfire Farms? They're located in Florida. Pretty good lines.
