Vent area width and depth, although most gauge by finger/palm size. Keel length, although it can be difficult to tell on some birds. Wing size, as far as meat/bone is concerned.
I've got some digital calipers that go to micrometre I plan to go over my birds with the first weekend of January...
I'd just like to step in and add my comments. 10 years ago, there were 2 Buckeyes in Columbus. Both mine. Judges hardly touched them, because there was no point. 7 years ago in Columbus, there were not many more(I can't recall a number for 2006 it was more than 2, but not much higher)...
This bird's entire head pretty much sums up what I like to see in a Buckeye. Medium size head is relative. I can find a bird with a fatter, nastier head than this one. So I consider it medium :P
spend some time with breeders of ameraucanas and brahmas. you learn pretty quick that a pea can take many shapes, and each individual has a preference. ill get a shot of my three males. show you how varied combs can be and what i prefer.
I don't mind tearing a bird apart either. But I do prefer to look at them in person. Pictures only give you a millisecond view of the bird. It doesn't matter how long you look into the photograph, all you get is a perspective of the bird at that exact moment.
That being said I tend to be a...
I would not breed with it until it shows a first full adult molt next year. White is something that comes out in most colored birds.
As far as making noise, that is what sucked me and my dad in with Buckeyes when we had them years ago. Very vocal breed, and its just entertaining to listen to...
The size classification of your bird will determine the class.
Buckeye Large Fowl will be the American. Buckeye Bantams, however, would be All other Combs Clean Legged.
Generally speaking with Large Fowl, origin dictates the class. .
In Bantams defining features dictate the class. This...
It could easily be a regional illness. I have heard of things like Marek's effecting birds differently based on the region. Where are you located? and where did the Buckeyes come from? Where were your other birds from?
this was a bird i was introducing to my flock. i was medicating to insure nothing unwanted was carried over. he cut back his water intake the days following, which is when the weather shot to the 90s.
Had a male suffer from heat exhaustion about a month ago. He perked up nicely, and quick, after the nasty weather passed. However his leg color has faded. Has anyone else noticed this in their Buckeyes? His legs are still yellow, just not as vibrant as they once were.
We had a Cockerel which I was unimpressed with. He had good size, about 4-5 ounces more than the other larger Cockerels. But he carried his head too far back. edit-It also looked like he had injured his keel early on.
He tasted better than he looked.
Culling is a delicious process.
I wormed the cockerel I got from you since he was raised outdoors, didn't want him to transfer anything in his feces. I also dipped him for mites at that time(which I am sure was unnecessary as I saw no clusters near his vent).
But having never wormed, and keeping my birds isolated indoors on...
Got a new camera, one that isn't a camera phone! So I'll be able to post some pics of my birds here that won't have grainy quality or heavy blue tint to them!
Currently only have pictures of a Cockerel I received from Laura not too long ago. Used him to test the camera out.
Still in...
I'd expect a 22 week Buckeye to be in the ball park of 7lbs. If you are going for the quick, burn out and die, re-order more next year approach than yes go for Cornish White Rock cross.
There are reasons people use something like a Buckeye or Jersey Giant or a Delaware(as I see you have...
My birds are just shy of 12 weeks, and its cool enough outside. Let me go check them and I'll let you know what I have at the moment. Give me about an hour, I'll edit this post.
Edit - I only weighed the first 7 I grabbed. One of the cockerels fought with the sack enough that he tore...
