Yeah - I have to be aware of combs and frostbite - our temps can go from humid 90's in the summer to sustained days with highs in the teens with wind and lows in the neg 20's consistantly - and some dips to -40's!!!! brrrrr
allopecia ! :) ha ha whatever it is - I know it was due to poor health at hatch .... for whatever reason. Since I hold her each day, I can see her skin is pretty healthy - now getting a little red from sunburn - but all over - she is healthy - just Fu-ugly !!!!! and smaller than...
I'm figuring some of this will fill in - there are some sparse feather follicles on her neck and many on her head ....
Also - a few posts above someone was talking about feathers curling out she has those on both sides and it seems that will go away with molting. My other 4 buckeye chicks...
ha ha well I saw her parents - and certainly there is no NN passed on from them - so it may be some sort of spontaneous mutation from the hatching issues ???? Isn't she UGLY !!!!
the others are splash Arkansas Blues :) bred to lay production amounts (leghorn) of BLUE eggs :)...
Hi all ! Sorry I've been gone a while - but the buckeye peeps have been doing well - all except 1 .... She came to me at a day - and was already poor, so I figured she would die. I don't save them anymore - I learned my lesson. But she held on ... and now she ugly and growing .... I think...

It's been a long wait for me to get some quality Buckeyes - I am really beside myself waiting this last week for them to hatch!
I remember I started on this thread with a hatchery Buckeye that turned as orange as a dark buff orph ... ha ha Oh well.
Hum .... nice idea ..... I have heard not to use cedar shavings with chickens.... after I did to no ill effects ..... so I just had kept cedar out of my mind when thinking of chicken things ....
But if you are having not only no problems - but a benefit .... I bet in my new coop going up...
Indeed - which is why I pushed on you earlier - as I see many newbies come here post a little and leave because of the show heavy bent .... and selfishly, I would like to have much more interaction beyond evaluating birds to SOP (which is fine - I just want more and different interactions)...
ha ha Mine either ! I still give it.
I agree better is far "better" than best ... but still a poor choice of adjective ... when no adjective is needed ... the way I do it is ..... with no qualifying hierarchy is best .... (get it ? best?)
That also explains the vocabulary you choose...
I'm an editor ..... I can't help myself ... since you answered nicely - but I feel a bit peeved at me - I think you also may be honestly trying to share .... I'll just show you want hit me as mean and unkind .... first off posting in all Bold and Italic is like super stressing what you are...
Sigh. Great answers and help for newbies from Minichickenmommie ....
I hate the sanctimonious "my way is the only way" attitude that always comes out on this thread. If you were born and reared in a place with chickens then maybe you never had to learn from 0. Most of us have to...
Is leg color a dominant gene ? any one know how to focus on leg color to reduce the yellow?
(NO - I'm not showing or selling - this is a personal preference)
Once you get them - the questions you have will be more specific - and I know most people on this forum love to answer questions.
So please let us know when they arrive and post pictures !!!
